Pivo of the persons taken at Cnrdonns belonging to Lopez's force were shot nt Matnnzns on the 2Gth nit. Four of them wero Irish or Scotch and ono on American a mere boy who stated that he joined the expedition under the impression that it was go- ing to California. Just before ho was shot ho ashed permission tcwrite a letter to his mother giving information of his fate. After finishing the letter it was torn up by the soldiers charged with his execution. A spectator collected (he pieces and pasted I hem together with tho intention of forwarding the letter to the boy's parents. ttF A portion or division of the Cuba expedition arrived in New Orleans on the 6th inst. in the schooner Matilda Jane from Key West and Tampa Day. Intelligencer of 18th ult. says: Cap- tain Smith and several othor persons citizens of Rusk county Texas passed through this placo on their return homo from In- dependence Mo. to which point they had traveled six hundred miles to start upon their overland trip to California. They stato that after having fitted out at a considerable expense pay- ing enormous prices for wagons and stock they laid in" twelve days provender for their teams and went one hundred and twen- ty miles on the plains but finding it so bleak and barren so des- titute of grass they thought it prudent to return before their provender was exhausted. They did so sold out their outfit at Independence and have abandoned the trip for this year. In our article on the "qualification of electors" which will bo found on the first pugo of to-day's paper wo committed an error in regard to the pre-requisites to bo observed by foreigners to en- title them to the rights of suffrage which we hasten to correct.
