Page 14 Feature Section Common sense about the common cold By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. Mv husband insists that when our children have head colds they should go to school anyway. His reasoning? Colds have to run their course because there is no cure for them. I disagree on the school issue. Do you? A. I'm not a medical doctor, but common sense (plus a little knowl- edge) tell me that an ignored cold can lead to complications that sometimes may be serious. Also, parents of other children may resent having youngsters with colds in the same classroom. Ellis Construction Co. Help for xnotch year' beneficiaries? Bv Leonard J. Hansen Copley News Service Q: Your recent article, "Beware of Scam Claims About Social Se- p curity," makes particular refer- ence to James Roosevelt's Nation- * al Committee to Preserve Social Security. This brings to mind a recent questionnaire my wife received, requesting a donation of $10 for promoting remedial legislation for "notch group" Social Security recipients. Both my wife and I are in this category. Does any of the legislation en- dorsed by Roosevelt's group have a possible chance of rectifying this gross inequity? — W.W., Sebr- ing, Fla. A: The possible corrections to the "notch year" (people born be- tween 1917 and 1921) benefit levels in Social Security are subjects of active debate in Congress and the administration. Congress will lis- ten to the lobbyists from some recognized senior citizen organ- izations. but will rely most on the "weight of the mailbag'' from con- stituents in effecting any change. It is doubtfu...

Page 9 (t BOOK REVIEWS: Actress, Minister write On Love, Courage Bette Davis' "This 'N That" written with Michael Herskowitz makes for interesting summer reading fare. Sorry - I can't say the same for "My Mother's Keeper" penned by her daughter, B.D. Hyman. Davis' book is filled with color- ful anecdotes about Hollywood, and her husbands, and you'll be nspired with her account of her recent mastectomy and stroke. Her assistant, Kathryn Sermak, gets full credit for Bette's perse- verance and strong fight to return to work. She gives warm insight to her own responsibilities as a mother, mother-in-law and grandmother and speaks frankly about the family relationships. Dr. Robert H. Schuller has turned out another winner entitl- ed "Be Happy You Are Loved." It's a book about love and "the three offers of love" open to one and all. If you're experiencing grief or failure, this is the book you need to read today. Dr. Schuller is founder and senior minister of the Crystal Cathedral in Garde...

Page 1.0 Feature Section By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. I am tired of presumably knowledgeable people who are so stupid about the whole area of childhood learning disabilities. They frequently get that subject all mixed up with emotional maladjustments and mental retar- dation. Our 10-year-old son has been di- agnosed as having a specific iearning disability related to lan- guage skills, mainly in the area of reading. However, he is very bright and displays no abnormal emotional difficulties. Can you provide a little expert input (and persuasive clarifica- tion) on this subject? A. How is this for a starter: By definition, children with specific learning disabilities are average or above average in intelligence. In fact, many cases are cited of famous, high-achieving people who had learning problems as children. Included are Winston Churchill, Pablo Picasso, Agatha Christie and Thomas Alva Edison. A book titled "Cradles of Emi- nence" also refers to others. In the ...
