ENTERTAINMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 9 March 1883

ENTERTAINMENT             On Saturday evening last, March 3, the Diamond Creek Cricket Club gave an entertainment on behalf of the funds   of the Club. Mr. E. M. Bill occupied the chair and introduced the performers. The Chairman, in opening the en tertainment, stated his dissent to the system of cram, cram, now so prevalent in the educatioual institutions of Vic toria, and urged the cultivation of all manly out-door games as the only antidote to the pernicious system. WINE FROM BEET. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 16 March 1883

WINE FROM BEET. ----o---- All the world (says M. Augusto Delouil, of Gardanne-Leos-Marseillo, 'Franco) knows of tho ravages which the Phylloxera has made on the European grape for some years past. The doprodations of this terrible post have been in no ways exaggerated. Ingredient on ingredient, process on process, have boon tried, the expori mentors having little more than their labour for their pains. In view of this evident result, some, with the encouragement of some learned socie ties, have had the courage to propoIse the total abandonmont of the cultulre of this once precious plant, because they have discovered all they desire to replace it in another vegotable. The heet flurnishes a first-class alcohol. 'ithe red boot, strong in sugar, pro. duces by formentation a wine which has been foundt ...
