"PICKWICK" REALISES £495. ORIGINAL ADVERTISEMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 18 September 1914

"PICKWECK" REALISES £495. ORIGINAL ADVERTISEMENTS. "Sooet are the uses of advertise ment" received its full tribute at a recent auction, when a complete series of the 20 numbers, beginning March 31, 1830, of "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club," with every wrappor, every advertisement (includ ing the slips), everything, in fact, as issued, a veritable Simon Pure of a set, appeared and fascinated a com pany ready to pass an examination in the "po.nts" of a geduinely perfect "Pickwick." The 20 numbers easily beat the am ount paid for a similar set unearthea and sold in America for £286, in bringing £495. The set was well known to Dickens' students as that formed by die late Captain R. J. H. Douglas, In.., a most diligent ad mirer. It is uscless to decry the price or the re.ison. Here are the 20 num bers in their earliest issue. With them are the back and front wrappers co advertisements, tie extra leaf adver tisements of "Heneky's Brandy" ann "Mchi's Catalogue," a folded adver...

In ranamllal and Colon a week ago I saw one of thc. imosit stupeudous worak of man in subduing, or conquering, thoe earti and making it quitable for his purpaosc. 1 thought how snisely God had left the sub duing of the earth to lman, and a blessing must come to liumsanity fronm mastering nature and subduing it to lnua's conveni. unce. I teatified to tile people there, and to the millions who read my serlons, re specting the increased education of humani. ty through Isodern inventions, which speak to us of the dawning of the ?New Era so long foretold in the Bible.
