High Price of Farming Machinery. RURAL COMMISION PROPOSED TO ENQUIRE. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 14 March 1919

High Price of Farming Machinery. RURAL COMMISION PROPOS ED TO ENQUIRE. At the last meeting of the Berri gan branch of the F. ancl S. a dis cussion arose over the presont high price of farming implements and machinery. Mr Greggery said that if. wheat growing was to be encouraged it was time that action was taken to bring the prices of commodities somewhere normal. Machinery had gone up 75 percent, or 80 per cent. Freight had come down 60 percent., but'machinery had not and was ou the iucrease, and some protest should be made. He be lieved that the machinery firms had been able to pay their employ ees bonuses, these naturally coming out of the pockets of .furmers. -If something was not done the indus try would be killed. Mr Pyle said a resolution might bis prepared and sent to the district council meeting and from there to the conference. The only way would be for a Royal Commission to enquire into the matter to ascer tain if the prices were justifiable. The firms would not bring down...

Super For Wheat. HEAVIER DRESSINGS ADVISED. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 14 March 1919

Super For Wheat. heavier dressings advised. Wliile.he was associated with the* South Australian Department of Agriculture, Mr A. E. V. Richard son, M.A., consistently advocated the application of heavier dressings of superphosphate in wheat grow ing than farmers generally favor. During his regime in Victoria as Superintendent of Agriculture he has been steadily hammering at, the same thing. That he is proceeding on sound lines is abundantly shown by conclusive experiments con ducted in both States under expert guidance. ' Recently Mr Richard son addressed a large gathering of . farmers at the Lougerenong College iu Victoria, and among other mat ters lie directed attention to some inaiiurial tests. These, lie pointed out, revealed almost convincingly that superphosphate was the most profitable fertiliser ; that it could be applied ill quantities far greater-! than were customarily applied in the district; that the application of lime there was actually harmful and depressed the yield...
