FRENCH SKETCHES OF ENGLISH CHARACTER. (From the Athenaum.) [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 1 June 1861

FRENCH SKETCHES OF ENGLISH ;" ::a..a,V, ¦? : CHARACTER. '¦ (From the Athenatm.). -THEignornnoe of tho French'as to the man- ners and.customs of England is proverbial, and at'different periods books have been published on this country by French authors 'wherein' as'much reliance may be placed as 'iii the fiction of Peter Wilkins, We doubt, howeyer, if anything so absurd as " Les .Anglais, Londrcs," i&o., has ever before been | T issued 'from-the Paris press. .Such a worJj-tT would probably have passed unnoticed bud not M. THE VINE ON THE MURRAY. (From the Albury Border Post, May 4.) [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 1 June 1861

THE VINE OS THE MURRAY. (From the Albury Jlonlcr Post,.May 4.) Sikce our last articlo on vinegrowing, we have taken the trouble to collect a few sta- tistics relative to the yield of wine in tho neighbourhood of the Murray.. It appears' that thc past year has been-a favourable one to the viuogrower, not only as regards the quantity of grapes, but also in a mcteorolo eical point of view. Last year a portion bf the grape crop was burnt up by the bot. winds, and a peculiar flavor was imparted to: thc wino from that circumstance. The wen thor during the vintage of 18.G0 was alsf, too' warm to admit of slow je"rmentaf.:,on. This year, wc aro linppy to say, tho 'hot'winds have don.o very/little damage, and the tem-, .pcViiture during the' period devoted to press- ing the grapes, lia's been'everything that could bo desired. The saccharometer shows the specific gravity of tho " musi"_ tb be at least .50 per cent, higherthanitho pravity of the wines in Germany, and if that, fact is taken in ...

Wtjt Courin4, SATURDAT. JUNK I, 1861. It was very gratifying to learn that the re- solutions, brought forward last week by Mr. Watts, upon tho expediency of offering other inducements to cotton-growers than llioso contained in the Land Billj were en? dorsed by a large majority of tho House. The resolutions asserted tho principle that lt w«9 desirable to create another export, tlja.t it was quite possiblo to create another export as profitable ne fhat iipon wbiph the prosperity bf the colony now mainly depends, and that, In order to afford encouragement to enterprising men to enter upon the spepulatjiqn qt option growing upon a large scale, liberal grants of }and should, under certain conditions, bo made by the government. BOTANIC GARDENS. [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 1 June 1861

BOTANIC GARDENS. We have been favored with the following report by the Director of the Botanic Gar- dens:? Botanic Gardens, Brisbane, Gth May, 18G1. Sir,I have the honour herewith to trans-   mit to you my report upon the Botanical Gardens, placed under my charge in the year ]855. The variety of matters to be touched upon compels ino to be brief in my comments upon each, but I hope to succeed in afford- ing proof that I have striven to render these gardens not merely a place of healthful re- creation, but also of instructive and practical utility ; thus carrying out the best object of the duties devolving upon me. Deferring for the present any remark upon prospective improvements, I will confine my- self to an explanation of the condition of the ground when first placed under my control, and of measures adopted for their extension and ornamentation. When the government of New South Wales made over those grounds for the use of the public, the whole contained an area of o...
