What a Temperance Township is Like. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 9 May 1891

What a Temperance Township is Like. An English visitor, writing from Evanstoii, a suburb of Chicago, says that while it may bn fitly described as beautiful, healthful, and delightful, it has to temperance men a higher claim of appreciation, inasmuch as it is a prohibition town. In all its miles of streets and avenues, broad and straight, not a single drinking shop of any kind is to be found, in fact exists, the last, struggle of the druggest to evade the law having been defeated. Evanston has over 12,000 inhabitants, comprised in the three contreminous sections of one township, and the uearest ' saloon ' is at Rosehill, four miles away. The history of this prohibition district is interesting, dating back as it does 30 years ' or more. The town is named after Mr. Evans, who gave some land for purposes of a university ; hence its name. Tho donor bargained th;vt tho college chartershould secure prohibition of the liquor traffic. This point was duly incorporated ; and it forbids the kee...

Depew's Notion [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 16 May 1891

Depe-w's Notion. Tho Honor. Chaunoey M. Depew carries a very honvy life insurance. His notion is that it is worry and anxiety that shorten tho lives of most business men ; that the worry is chiefly owing to their anxiety to leave their families provided for when they his life ; few can afford to carry as much, and many will think the care of such an amount likely to cause worry aud anxiety. Too much money is sotnotimos as great an anxiety breeder as too little. Tho very wealthy are not usually tho longest lived. Worry begets ill-health more than hard work, no doubt. People who worry the most about their health seldom have the best Those who never have time, or take tirao, to think they are sick, seldom are.
