Great Fire at Walhalla. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 1 December 1888

Great Fire at VWalhalla. A disastrous fire occurred at WValhalla on Saturday last, resulting in the total destruction of the principal business portion of the town. It appears that the fire originated about 'half-past nine in the back part of Mr Crawford's drapery establishment, in consequence of some imflnimmable materials being set fire to by a lighted candle ncci dentally overturned. In spite of the utmost exertions of IMr Crawford. the fire soon became uncontrollable, and the whole of the building was wrapped in a sheet of flame which rapidly extended to the adjnining premises. Almost the whole of the buildings being built of wood it soon becamne only too evident that the greater part of the town was doomed to inevitable destruction. As water was extremely difficult to obtain little could be done" to avert the wilde spreading ruin, although banls of wil lling volunteers worked indefatigably under most discouraging, circumstances. Not until the whole of the principal business est...
