"The blacks are evidently bent on mischief   in this quarter, for, immediately after the murder by them of the woman near Rockhampton, we find them brutally murdering a shepherd of Mr. Stuart's, who is settling down on the Maryborough station. They mutilated the poor man in a most frightful manner. They also killed a horse, and a Wide Bay black boy who was riding it, is missing. Report says they have threatened to attack Mr. Fitzsimm...

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. [We are not responsible for the opinion of our Correspondents.] A WEEPING EDITOR. TO THE EDITOR OF THE OBSERVER. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 14 December 1860

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. [We are not responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents.] A WEEPING EDITOR. TO THE EDITOR OF THE OBSERVER. SIR,—I am a new arrival in Eden, and having a great love of the curious, one of the first things I did after obtaining comfortable quarters, was to procure number one of the Telegraph, having been informed that that journal was the first printed in Eden. I could not help smiling when the tiny little thing was handed to me by my landlady ; but when I commenced to read the address, written I suppose with the best of intentions, I laughed beyond all bounds of endurance—so much so, indeed, that my landlady thought I had gone into " 'sterics." The idea, for instance, "Eden—smiling yet sad —ovely, yet neglected—you hare got your news- paper at last. No longer shall your praises remain unsung, nor your grievances unwept." Oh! dear me. Whoever heard anything like this? Only   imagine the Editor perched on the top of the Telegraph tent, with ...

POST-OFFICE IRREGULATIONS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE OBSERVER. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 14 December 1860

POST-OFFICE IRREGULARITIES.   TO THE EDITOR OF THE OBSERVER. SIR,—I am not one who would grumble unless there was a cause, but being a sufferer on the present occasion you will pardon me for troubling you to insert these few lines. I posted letters on Tuesday last for Sydney of the greatest importance, and you may guess my con- sternation on Wednesday morning, when I was informed that the mail had not been put on board the steamer. I don't know who is to blame, but I do know that some one is, and the sooner an inquiry is instituted the better. I remain, Sir, &c., A SUFFERER.

VICTORIAN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 14 December 1860

VICTORIAN NEWS. From the Argus of the 10th inst. we take the following :—       Our readers will scarcely give credit to the fact that the story contained in an extract from the Cornwall Chronicle of the 1st inst., which appeared   in our columns yesterday, in reference to the collu- sion of a Melbourne detective in the escape of the forger Vallentine, proves to be a tissue of falsehoods from beginning to end. The real facts of the case are these :—It appears that Vallentine arrived from Tasmania by vessel named the Dart, and landed   at Geelong, where he obtained shelter and conceal- ment at the house of a friend of his, named Wade. Before leaving Tasmania he seems to have left instructions that all letters for him should be addressed, under the name of "Henry Ross," to   the office of this paper, and the authorities having found this out, had a letter so addressed for the purpose of laying a trap for the...
