Works and Finance. MAYOR'S MINUTE. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 15 December 1928

Works and Finance. MAYOR'S MINUTE. AtTuesday night's meeting of Fair field Municipal Council the Mayor (Aid. Clancy) submitted, among others, the following minute: "I have to report for the inform ation of council that, entering upon the discharge of the duties of Mayor, I found it impossible to get any in formation as to the number of labor ers employed, on the works upon which men were employed. I wished to know how much money was re quired to complete the works in hand, or, on the other hand, how long it would take the men then em ployed to finish the work already commenced, but I could learn noth ing. I was assured that the works in hand had been duly authorised by resoluton of council, but the roads engineer could supply me with nothing to assist me in determin ing the position of the council, hav ing due regard to the finances. I had already discovered that the re tiring council had left an empty treasury, as the books clearly show ed. This made me all the more an xious to kno...

FASHION TO-DAY Accessories That Make the Ensemble. ROSE COLOURED ORGANDIE. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 15 December 1928

FASHION TO-DAY Accessories That Make the Ensemble. (By Barbara Winslow.) ROSE COLOURED ORGANDIE. Makes this new evening frock, thus introducing a new material to the evening mode. The wide skirt is composed of ruffles fitted to each other with a double piping, the space between being filled with sat in. The cloak collar takes off when not needed. Another notable point is the trailing bow of reseda green. Linking headwear with footwear is one of the fashions of the hour. The woman who takes clothes sar iously treats the point as an import ant one. Certainly, it has its at tractions. Holiday makers will like some of the ensembles of hat, shoes and bag that arebeing ..offered. Shoes aigfd bag are of the same material of . which the hat will be trimmed. Bengalian silk makes such a set, its pattern a strong orange and blue against a green background. The bag is of the envelope type-rival ling the pouch with its new thumb strap-and the shoes are a high heeled strapped model cut very low a...

FILM BOOSTS AUSTRALIAN FRUIT IN ENGLAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 15 December 1928

FILM BOOSTS AUSTRALIAN FRUIT IN ENGLAND. One of the most novel and effect ive means of popularising Australian fruit and canned products was put into operation in London recently during the showing of the Para mount British release, "Hunting tower," starring Sir Harry Lauder. Immense window displays of Aus tralian goods advertised the fact that sample packages of fruit and tinned goods would be distributed to all purchasing tickets to see the Brit ish produced Paramount picture, "Huntingtower." As a result, the Australian Prefer ence League in London, which stood behind the idea, reported a big in crease in the sales of their Austra lian stock.

SILK VOILE IN SULPHUR [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 15 December 1928

SILK VOILE IN SULPHUR ,And brown shades make this use ful frock. Accessories may deter mine the purpose of it. Or a slip may tell the hour of day and the oc casion. A light-hued slip, shoes, hosiery and hat will say it's after noon. A dark slip and acessories of a less formal sort will say otherwise. Many of the fabrics are patterned, and were inspired, apparently, by the vogue for printed materials, though many of them take on the likeness of brocades. With the smart little tailored hat, shoes of leather are worn. They may match in colour. The picturesque hats of the sea son are well accompanied by foot wear that dazzles in colour in new and original effect. Apart from colour, or possibly in stead of it, the link that joins shoes and hat together may be handbag and scarf, or some other important detail of the costumc planned with that point in view. H is very easy to achieve an en semble though it is very easy also to spoil it. Fashion insists that we do the first, but not the seco...

St. John's Park Show. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 15 December 1928

St. John's Park Show. The schedules o£ the St. John's Park are now available and residents should make a point of securing one straight away. The printing, the first of its nature undertaken locally by the "Biz."' proprietor, is a credit to him, the type, style and neatness being very satisfactory. The show committee are anxious that these (schedules will reach everyone in the district, who is at all able to help make the show a success. The dry spell we have experienced has not tended to make for a record entry, in the fruit, flowers and vege table sections, though there is still time for the floral section to be worth seeing; but the committee do hope that residents and neighbours will do their utmost to swell the entries in the other classes, to make up the loss in those classes in which the weather plays such an important feature. Get your schedules now !!! The secretary is Mr. A. F. Camkin.
