MELANCHOLY LOSS OF A FEMALE CONVICT SHIP. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 27 June 1835

MELANCHOLY LOSS OF A FEMALE CONVICT   SHIP.   We have the painful task to report the total destruc-   tion of the Ship Neva, of 337 tons, under the command of Captain B. H. Peck, upon a reef about 12 miles to the westward of King's Island— (which we know from   experience, is not correctly laid down in any chart.)   The Neva sailed from Cork on the 8th January, and had on board 234 women, (153 of whom were prisoners   of the Crown) and a crew of 25, out of which num- ber, is saved fifteeen - eight of the crew , and six women. The vessel struck the reef about four o'clock in the morning of the 13th May, and shortly afterwards went to pieces. The boats being swamped, the only chance left of saving life, was that of clinging to portions of the wreck, which may account for the great destruction. The survivors were for six weeks upon the Island   some of whom arrived here this day, having been   ta...

THE CORNWALL CHRONICLE. LAUNCESTON.V. D. LAND SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1835. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 27 June 1835

THE CORNWALL CHRONICLE. V. D. Land, Saturday, June 27,1835. The Courier displays a very illiberal feeling in recommending that the Press shou d be shackled. It is a narrow minde   and miserable policy, that we supposed could not find an advocate in the Colony, beyond, the interested circle. We kn w that the Courier is the paid org n of the Government, --yet we did not think it possible that its proprietor would lend it, to assist in the establishment of a system, that, if succeeded in, would destroy his prosepects, as an individual citizen— in comm n with that of all others. The fo'- lowing remarks, which we dare say the   learned Ed tor of the Courier has seen before in print, we earnestly recommend to his attention :— '" The fact, however, is, that so long as   there are abuses in Governments, so long w ll the men who have the means of profit- ing by those abuses, exert themselves to multiply the list of offences against Go- vernment, and to ...

THE CORNWALL CHRONICLE. LAUNCESTON, V. D. LAND, SATURDAY, JULY 4, 1835. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 4 July 1835

THE CORNWALL CHRONICLE LAUNCESTON, V. D. Land, Saturday, July 4, 1835,     Whilst the wreck of the unfortunate   male prison ship, George the Third, at the   entrance of the Derwent, is fresh in our minds, we have a similar catastrophe to   deplore, in the destruction of the barque     Neva, prison ship, at the entrance of Bass's Strait, on her passage to Sydney. The scacrifice of human life in both instances,   is appalling:~ In the first named vessel,   134 human beings perished, and in the latter, no less than 224, making a total of 358 souls, that have been hurried into eter- nity by accidents, that we maintain, should not have occurred. We have a Colonial Marine, that is now to be supported by Colonist, at an amaz- ing cost, and ought to be employed in the only way in which the Colony can be bene- fitted by its services. One of the vessels   might, w...
