South Sea Trading. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 7 February 1919

South Sf a Trading. The dem'iildt the Commonwealth and ! Solithfern r'l: Dominion should^ control either directly, or as the mandatories of , the League of Nations two of the prin ciple groups of islands dn the Western Pacific raises a question which must be considered — the South Sea Island Trade. It is known . that Germany through a Hamburg Syndicate captured in large measure the trade of the islandsdirecting to Hamburg, that which had formerly be longed to- Sydney and Auckland. .Germany will have no status now in the island groups in question and indeed . German, trade throughout the , Pacic Islands must of necessity collapse simply, from the fact that it was subsidised to a ver»y .great ? extent by the Government . of the ex-Kaiser and. because the trade of the islands was in fact an enterprise of German Imperialism astutely working by means of teade to . attain military dominance in ? .the Pacific through naval bases. ? ' . Is the trade built up by Germany to fall to pieces? ' ...

The Captured German Colonies. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 7 February 1919

? The Captored German Colonies. ' Feeling in regard to the captured Ger man Colonies in the Pacific promises to be deeply aroused. It is a question which in the main concerns Australia and New Zealand whose forces conquered the territories for the Empire. The question really rests upon something- else, the stability and permanence of the League of Nations. Given absolute security on that point circumstances must be consid ered on that basis on the one hand and o nthe other in relation to the- alternative which seems to be direct annexation. It is possible that annexation might be pur chased at too high a price, for we must remember that were Australia and New Zealand conceded the right of full and unconditional annexation that very action would forbid us from- opposing the an nexation by Japan of islands; north of the Line. There seems not much- doubt -but that Australia will be entrusted with the control of the Colonies her forces seized, and that similarly to New Zealand .will be ...

Pooling of Resources. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 7 February 1919

Pooling of Resources. It has been suggested that the war bill of Britain should be pooled, and the pro posal has been met by the objection tha£ the step taken would interfere with and 'militate against autonomy in dominion .government. That is certainly a valid objection, for nothing that takes place under the new system must be allowed to interfere with our rights of administering our own af Afa.rs. \ / When, however, we begin to study the question in this relation there emerges the point that all supernational control, ' that which the Peace Conference is ac cepting on behalf of the nations, implies a' giving up to the League of Nations of certain powers and rights in exchange ?for compensating advantages of far more irhportance and far higher value. The; keeping of the peace, which all re cognise to be chief aim and object of the League of Nations just as it was of the Alliance must mean an interdependence and ? interaction among the nations which may. seem, ? although, it does n...

Gur TJhirdi Year. A Word to Members off the Leagued : 44 Weigh in with your Wads.** The Returned Soldiers and Citizens Political Federation, has entered upon its third year of activity. This federation links up the returned soldiers and loyal citizens of Australia into one huge political organisation which i6 in no way allied to any party. It is out for Australia, with Big Australian ideas. This tremendous factor in the political world was brought into being mainly by the work done by the Queensland League, which was the pioneer of the move ment. The work was done, by self-sacrificing returned soldiers and citizens at ileawy cost to themselves. It is* nofr your opportunity to join in this splendid' progressive movement. CIGARETTE SMOKE IN PALESTINE. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 7 February 1919

CIGARETTE SMOKE IN PALESTINE. I reclined in my 'bivvy,' (writes 'Tralas' in the 'Kia Ora Coo-ee'), and with a; sigh of contented anticipation, lit a cigarette. My back was propped up by a kit bag, my feet, with the aid of a pet rol tin, gracefully imitated Mahomet's coffin, and my general demeanour was one of ease, even if the elements of elegance were 'lacking. Round me my connnades slept— the' inelegant form of Darcy stretched out in the far corner, Smith gently shoring at my. elbow, Whilst Muller and Farnsvvorth each occupied, .-six feet ' . of His , Maj e s-ty's newly acquired earth on- the other side. I drew my, first mouthful of smoke, ahd gently puffed it out, the while I began to ruminate. Ease and a cigarette combined inevit ably lead to the latnd ';;of ^Reverie/ and my ' thoughts immediately began to drift. ! At ?the second puff I' was' on my wa:y home; and plans for my 'civvy' future were dimly shaping themselves in my head; Half-a-dozen magic mouithfuls, and I was home d...

I : (Gunga in 'The Kia Ora Coo-ee.') ^ ? One cannot escape the feeling, in go ing through a captured town in Palestine which the Germans have used much, that they asserted themselves very forcibly, rv amongst the Turks. Their good stand ing with Enver must have 'given them a powerful 'pull' amongst the Turkish soldiery. Even amid the waste and ruin of such a town you will gain the im pression that the Turk was the dupe of the Hun. You feel how the proud Teu ton must have despised, in his heart, the miserable Turkish army. Indeed, you feel he did it more openly than in his heart. When he looked about him upon the Turkish force and thought of the military splendour of the Fatherland, . he must have loathed this people with whom he found himself fighting. For the...
