THE SOUTH GIPPSLAND ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 4 March 1880

TIIE SOUTII GIPPSLAND ELECTION. The election of a member to repre sent South Gippsland in the new Parliament, although conducted with the utmost enery by the fricuds of both candidates, passed over very satisfactorily, good humor, prevailing throughout the constituency. It is customary after an election to hope that good feeling will be restored, but we have no need to express a wish of this sort, as the friendly relations of those engaged in the political contest were never disturbed. As we antici pated, our old member, Mr. F. C. Mason, was returned by a large pre ponderance of votes, the polling at the 22 polling places giving bims a majority of 426 over his opponent, M3r. 3Maclvor; 944 being recorded in 3Ir. Mason's favor, and 51S in Mr. MacIvor's. Mr. Mason passed the day of the election in Traralgon, while Mr. Maclvor left the contest in the hands of his friends, proceed ing himself to 'Melbourne to exercise the franchise in several metropolitan constituencies. By the evening t...

OURI \~N I'NSPO'I"S CORNER. A COMM03IO COMPL.\INT. Oh listen w;hile I tell to you My piteous ta'o of woo, What 'tis that makes me weary And my spirits sink so low. SUNNYSID E -IlASS I1IVERE. PROM A C3IUUXSONDNUR T. In mdre respects than one we are in the awkwardl position of a mailn betw? e two stools. Just on the boundary of the Ihfln Buln and Philip Island shires, and having a newspaper on each sile of us, ibut each at a considera.eh! , usiance from us, weare left to fight o'ni o`n 'bhttles, clear our own roads, build our bridges, and in short do everything we require to have done. Perhaps, however, a few lines in your valif ablecoiutmns occasionally, may turn a little attention to us, and resaut in r urobiining. at least some of the tlcantages enjoyed by those nearer the centres of population. The settlement, now very extensive, has chiefly taken phlace during the last three ye:us, and considering our dliltlelties, when we look at the imlrovemeuts in that time. I think we deserve credit for display of great energy. Like our neighbors, we h.ae suof ferced great loss through the lcterpillars appearlng etch year, but we look hopefully to the f...

, CORRESPON'DENE. TO THE EDITOR OF TIE GUARDIAN. Smi,-Tho time has arrived for the for mation of a Liberal organization in?Var rangu. Our friends at Drouin have taken a step in this direction, and Warragrul should not be behind. The result of the late election has shown, Warragal., to be 'a Liberal? strongliold," therefore I: apprehend no difficulty in. forning a powerful league in this district. Liberalism, when fairly pitted against Conserratism,.is the domi nant power,; aDd at the next general elec tion the Liberal vote will be in the ascen dari!i 'but in order: to attain this .end, orgaizatioi? is necesary. I would suggest, Mr. Editor, thst, those desirous of joiniig in this niovement should leave their names at the " Guardian",office. Yours, &ci, . C. . ,thi Marcl,. 1SSO.:
