DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT STAWELL STAWELL, Wednesday, Dec. 5th. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 14 December 1877

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT STAWELL STAWELL, Wednesday, Dec. 5th. A fire broke out here this morning, which completely destroyed an hotel, a large lodging house, and several small dwellings in the very centre of the township. A clean sweep of a quarter-acre block was made by the flames, which, owing to the- absence of sufficient water, maintained the mastery for a full hour. The damage done must amount at least to £2,000. Insurances upon the property destroyed were effected in the following offices--New Zealand Com painy £490; Victoria, £250; Imperial, £200; National, £200; and the Standard-the amount in the latter case is not known. The origin of this fire has not been satisfactorily explained.   Mr Knipe, says the Age, has determined to stand for Booroondara against allcomers. Mr R. M. Smith will contest the seat on behalf of the Free-trade League.

SELECT POETRY. NEVER MIND. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 14 December 1877

SELECT POETRY. . NEVER 1NMD. What's the use of always fretting At the trials we shall find Ever strewn along our pathway ? Travel on and never mind. Travel onward-woriing,hoping Cast no lingering glance behind, At the trials once encountered Look ahead and never mind. What is past is past for ever ; Let all fretting be resigned; It willnever help the matter Do your best and never mind. Friendly words are often spoken When the feelings are unkind; Take them for their real value Pass thembyand never mind. Audif those who might befriend you, Whom the tics of nature bind, Should refuse to do their duty, Look to IHeaven and never mind.
