Up the Mountains. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 18 October 1884

tfj$ ih!e MbTmletifei. San' Joie (pronounced Hd-zayX tfio 5 Blue Mountain SanntorUm, is situated upon an elevated ridge 2400 feet above sea level, and digtaht B8 miles from Sydney.' 'The Railway Station (formerly known as Blue Mountain) was a few years ago changed to Lawson, at the same time the platforms known previously, as Wascoe's, and the Weatherboard; were respectively changed to Blaxland, and Wont worth. Falls, to commemorate or, perpetuate, the namesof the discoverers o£a 'road across the Blue Mountains. As but few persons knowthe bislorv of the oassdze of the Moun. tains, it will be perhaps interesting to Briefly 9 relate it. From' the earliest, period of the 9 Colony's settlement, a natural desire existed 9 to cross the barrier and explore the country 3 beyond, but tho efforts appeared for a number m of years to be as little likely of success as to |j rcaah the North Pole in the present day. .[S Among the officers sent out in the first convoy 9 of convict ships to establis...

GOSSIPING CORNER. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 18 October 1884

GOSSIPING CORNER. As the American would say, Mr. Editor, I guess those aldermen of ours got consider ably mixed at their last meeting. They had certainly better join the Debating Society and learn the i'ul'e3 of -debate. Alderman Garrard's indignation must have been worth witnessing, and in him the Council hare certainly a good guide as to ?the 'proper manner in which to conduct their business. It is certainly a.novelty in debate to allow one sneaker to propose amendment after amendment on the same motion. It will, unless altered, be a nest egg to cause a good deal of vexation to future Mayors. Alderman Garrard was evidently of opinion that ' A jest in scorn points out, and hits the thing More home than the morosesl satire's sting.' . . , . How very economical our Borough Council is becoming, at least, perhaps I should confine those remarks to the finance committee. The gentlemen comprising that body have aotually recommended that the ratepapers shall be printed gratis by a Sydney f...

POPULAR LECTURES. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 18 October 1884

POPULAR LECTURES. ? '* /'to the editor. Sir,— The lecture delivered at the Town Hall, —ewtown, on Wednesday' evening, by Mr. Humlet, entitled- 'the Practical Science of Everyday Life,' was quite b treat ; and it seems inexplicable that the hall was riot crowded with attentive listeners. ' In the short time occupied by the lecturer more knowledge of the subjectB treated could be gained than by a year and a, half's reading. . The impressions received from/the illustrations and apparatus used would be much more likelg to be permanently retainfd in the mind than the simple verbal descriptions to . be found in bookB. To those unacquainted with the character of the, various apparatus the lee- ' turer used and described, it would scarcely be thought the elaborately-finished instruments to bo seen, for instance, in optioians' windows —and apparently so full of mystery are the same in principle as, those so roughly made to suit the purpose of the lecture : and yet how simple many of them app...

Correspondence. THE FERRY BOATS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 18 October 1884

Correspondence. THE FERRY BOATS. TO THE EDITOn. Sin, — The inquest on the body of the . unfor tunate boy, Chas. A. Lockwood, sounds a note of warning to the proprietors of steam ferry boats. According to the evidence, we have two boys racing about a pnssenger steam ferry boat. One is drowned apparently off the paddle-bos, and, most singular, there does not appear to have been any notice taken of the catastroDhe by his companion, who, to a certain. extent, was accessory to his death, or by any on board — for it appears to have hap pened almost at the moment of leaving the wharf. My object;, however, is to draw the attention of the proprietors of ferry boats to the possibility of frequent accidents of this kind occurring, from the constant practice of the same thing on board their boats. I have . continually seen — and I now allude to our Balmain boats — some half-dozen young larri kins take possession, as it were, of the boat, rush about from end to end during the whole' passage, sin...

Balmain Amateur Dramatic Club. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 18 October 1884

Balmain Amateur Dramatic Club. The sixth representation of this club took place in the School of Arts, Balmain, on Friday evening, the 10th inst ; the piece selected being a comedy in three acts entitled 'Pattnerafor Life,' written by the popular ftu'lior Henry J. Byron. The Hall was deluded to overflowing by a fashionable audience, evening dress prevailing. Of the performance we can only say that as a whole it was highly creditable to the members. Without attempting to criticise, which would be ungracious in us towards these painstaking amateurs, we think that the lady who took the part ot r.iuny smith, lias, luiiu to learn to take the place of leading lady in any ama teur performance, herjaoting being marked by care in every detail, which, added to most charming toilettes in each act, completed a very effective representation. Miss 'Priscilla was undertaken, at the short notice of two days, by a lud.v, whose family havi more than once contributed to the success of the club, n nd o...

Hutchinson; M.L.A., the presi dent, who ocfiupied tho chair, congratulated the club on the events winch had transpired ; during the past quarter. They had reason to be proud at having Mr. W. He then called upon tho secretary for tho report. - Mr. W. R. The Cattle Nuisance [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 25 October 1884

The Cattle Muisanoe The deputation of aldermen to the Colo nial Treasurer yesterday made out such a good case, in connection' with . the long complained of nuisance arising from, the driving of cattle through the streets of Balmain and Leichhsrdt in th'e'day time, that Mr Dibbspromised to find out whether he could not prevent its being done, except at hours when the streets were not occupied —the small hours of the morning, for in stance. We strongly advise the Balmain Council to apply to have its territory placed under the cattle driving act forthwith. It will come in useful in- future, even if the Minister stops the present nuisanoe.
