THE SCIENCE OF CRICKET BOWLING. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 1 October 1887

THE SCIENCE OF CRICKET BOWLING. THE cricket season (in England) has been a bad one for bowlers. With the hard true wickets that have been ob tainable almost from the beginning of the season, batsmen have for the most part had matters their own way, and scores of enormous proportions have been recorded. It must not obe supposed that the bowlers have lost their cunning. As a mat ter of fact, they are gradually attaining to a higher state of excellence, and, though we occasionally hear of the mastery which bat ting lis obtained in the field, cricketing authorities recogniso tihe progress made in thIe science of bowling by declining all pro posals to raise or widen thie wickets, Within the present century there have been remarkable changes in the method of bowling. The fast underhand style which at first prevailed gave way to "length" halls; than came Lillywhite's round-arm bowling, and this in turn has been altered until it is quite dliflbrent from what it was when it first; spread con...

CURIOSITIES OF TAXATION. V. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 1 October 1887

COURIOSITIES OF TAXATION, (Froe Al I thre Year Round.) V. Wit can only briefly indicate other ouriosi. ties of taxation undoer tile Pitt administra tion, some of which survived for a consider able time. Solicitors, attorneys, and notaries had to take out licenses, for which five pounds were charged for London and Edin burgh, three pounds for other parts of Great Britain. These rates were afterwards doubled. Conveyancers andspecial pleaders were taxed at first at ten pounds for London and Edinburgh, and six pounds for the country, which rates were afterwards raised to twelve pounds and eight pounds. Other licensed trades or professions are banlkers, auctioneers, valuators, and apprai sers, house-agents, pawn-brokers, pedlars, carriage-hirers, and the existing...

A a wEriEU of the colutnittoo of the Kiamna Cottngo Ilospital took place on Tuuesdtay evening last in accordance with the rule or by.law, which fixes the last Tuesday in each month for that purposo. All the menmbers of the committoee, we believe, wore in atten ldance ; and it is certainly a pleasant andi a dreditablle sight to see fifteen or sixtoeen gen. tlemen, each of whom, it may bo supposed, could occupy his time pretty much to his satisfaction at home, assembled in one apart ment, and discnssing the details of business connected withl a mteroly bonovolent institu tion, with as nmuch zeal and interest as if each one considored himself alone interested in the results.
