The Pioneer. SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 1895. TOWN WATER SUPPLY. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 10 August 1895

Ck Hionccr. SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 189',. TOWN WATER SUPPLY. The condition of the pipes supplying the township of Renmark with water de mands the serious con sideration of the towns psople and the owners of town allot nent3. . The present service is; quite inadequate to the requirements of the residents iiji the summer and if there is any. substantial increase in our popnlaiioil ami more tenements are occupied serioiis insphyjenience will be the result. The pipes when laid were only intended to be for temporary necessities, and many of tliem are totally unfit to resist the pressure re quired to send the water to the limits of the service, leaks constantly break ing out and flooding the streets with water and making bog holes and pools in several places. This state of affairs should not be allowed to continue and steps shofcld be immediately taken to afford a remedy. PARTGEBIGEBESIS AND THE NAVEL ORANGES. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 17 August 1895

PARTH^0^ENESI5 AND; ;THE; NAVEL OliXNiSEg. !■ It has been long known that the law of parthenogenesis or agmic re production finds illustration among animals. Thus in case of our common j , aphids, and they are common in Ca;li-1 fornia this season, there are often! several generations of females which never see any males, and yet which are entirely fertile and immensely pro lific. This is reproduction without males and is termed parthenogenesis. The male or drone bees, and various •other Hymenoptorus insects are also illustrations of agamic reproduction. The queen bee may lay as a virgin, ;she may lay unimpregnated eggs at will, and she may lay after her sperm ;sack is depleted, and in all such cases those eggs produce males, while im pregnated eggs always produce females, perfect as in case of the queen, or un developed as seen in the workers. It would seem that in the case of the navel orange, we have an illustration of the same kiud of development. In this parallellism, then, betw...

The Pioneer. SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 1895. FRUITGROWERS AND FRUIT PESTS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 17 August 1895

nmetr. ' SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 1895. FRUITGB0WEB6 AND FBU1T PESTS. Last week we no ticed in one of the metropolitan papers that a. deputation waited upon tbe Treasurer, consisting of fruitgrowers whose object was to induce the Mini ster for Agriculture to remove . the embargo placed by the Government under*; the regulations of the Fruit Pest Act 1892, on selling and market ing.,fruitinfestedwith injurious in sects or fungoid disease. The requi sitionists .desired particularly, to be allowed to sell their oranges and, lemons, which they admitted were af fected with red scale, stating they had no other means of disposing of them. The Treasurer gave what may be con trued into a favourable reply to the deputation, promising to refer the matter to the Minister for Agriculture. It is not evident that the latter is likely to comply weth this outrageous request, and if hie considers the in terests of other citrus growers in the colony he will meet it with a peremp tory refusal., The prevalen...

CORRESPONDENCE. BOILING DOWN. A REPLY. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 17 August 1895

CORRESPONDENCE. LOIUNG DOWN. A littPLY to the EurroE. Sir.—I notice that you luul a piece of I poetry iu your last issue of the''Pioneer,'" Entitled '"Hoiling Down." According to the writer's version of things there would be little or nothing left should a boiling down take place in ltenmark. The writer is vervmuch like a lot of other people we meet, too fond of finding fault with others and the work that they are doing while he himself is quite content to lie in his hunk wliiie they are doing it. It is not the first time this individual has had a cut in at nearly everyone in the town. Although he has not signed his name to his lines we know very well, and can give a good guess who it is. Had he signed his nit me I suppose it would have been, "Murray Cod," and a more appropriate name in my opinion could not he found for him. It is the best comparison 1 think that could be made, as we are all aware that n cod is all mouth and very little head and brains. 1 notice that he nearly alway...

THE PROPOSED RENMARK CONCESSIONS COMPANY. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 17 August 1895

THE ^RQBPSED .BENMARK CONCESSIONS (ioMPAlS Y.' (From the Financial News, London, June 15th 1895.) , The above palter publishes a long article entitled "Australia's Terman-! ent Wealth, The Irrigation and Colo nisation Schemes in connection with Government: Concessions." We re print about a third of the article, the paragraphs relating to the . proposed Company. It is confidently asserted, in the words of a leading financial authority of the day, that -the permanent wealth of Australia is to be found, not in the chance discoveries of gold in the rocks, but in the development of her fertile soil. A colonising company engaged in this form of assured wealth pro duction, and in raising, for the direct profit of its shareholders, products of the highest commercial value, forming new cultivating settlements, creating new towns, and establishing persons of all classes from Great Britain in pros perous circumstances, should there fore, it is urged, commend itself to the consideration of Brit...
