Old Age Pensions Amendment Act. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 8 November 1905

Old Age Pensions Amendment Act. The Carruthers Government i.s putting up quite a record of useful work — lit least the Assembly is do ing its share towards that desirable consummation. The Lands Com mission is the creature of this Gov ernment, and who can say that the worn oi .juugo uwen won i no much to purge the public anil ministerial life of N.S.W. No one will deny that so far the Commis sion has brought to light dirty work which would disgrace the annals of he worst administration of a South American republic. Then the Local Government and Liquor Bills are in the hands of the Legislative Council, and although the general opinion is that these measures, will be materially amended, still it is at the same time expected they will come back able to the Assembly. Should these two bills become law the Car ruthers Government will have the credit- of doing that which succes sive Ministries for three decades have promised, but made no serious attempt to carry out. * * . » And now the Go...

The Eden's Recent Perilous Trip. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 8 November 1905

The Eden's Recent Perilous Trip. (By ONE OF THE 60 ODD PASSESGEIIS). Dear Budget,— The Bega 'Star's' acknowledged, local editorial efful gence suffers almost a total eclipse by the super-brilliant scintillations and corruscations of its Sydnhy correspondent. The individual - mifrht, not h«vr- been so funnv. had he been where I was yesterday fortnight — a passenger by the steamer Eden from Sydney to Tathra — with his 'drawing of two or three nails and the repair of a ship's door with sticking plaster 1' If he had been jn the way of that lifebelt chest when a big sea burst the lashings and then tumbled by the ton into the saloon, he would probably now be a patient with a broken leg or some other injuries in one of the hospitals. If he had been at the foot of the saloon com panion-way when the deluge of salt water rolled down (and with his mouth as wide open as when he swallowed the Jacksonian yarn about the unimportance of the bad weather off Jervis Bay), his chat tering false teeth m...

Deceased partook of a hearty dinner, and appeared to be in the best of spirits, and his parents cannot account for his determined act. The speaker said the subject of the evening, he regretted to say, was as little understood by the majority of people as it was per haps by tho.se pri-senl. Jiedivided the ijlietftion as having four features --What is it ? Who seeks it? What is aimed at by it? and What would be the probable results ? In dealing with these several headings, he gave a short history of the union label, and how and why it was introduced as an amendment into the Trades Marks Bill, show ing that the whole intent and purpose was to bring about the enforced employment of unionists, which the Labour Party had failed to have introduced into the Federal Arbitration Act. The name in itself was nothing, it only meant a label, but t...

The Deviousness of a Deviation. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 8 November 1905

The Deviousness ot a Deviation. Somk time ago the Roads De partment, presumably on the re presentation of the Bega road su perintendent, proposed to make a deviation near the Verona public school, in order to do away with the old road which has been in use about thirty years. The suggested now' road was objected to by every resident in and around Verona, and it was urged that all that was wanted was a couple of compara tively inexpensive culverts on the old road and perhaps a little form ing here and there. The deviation would cost more than the requisite improvements on the old road, and what is more, even if the deviation were carried out, and the people given the choice of roads, they would use the old one. Portion of the old road is private property, but the owner is one with the rest of the residents in urging the claims of this thoroughfare on the authorities, and he would do no thing to interfere with the traffic. Seeing then that the people are not asking for the proposed de...
