Application from stone-breakers for increase in pay.-The committee con siders that all applications for in creased pay or other matters concern ing the day labour staff should be sent through the engineer, and recommends that this ipplication be referred to him for report to the general purposes committee. Cr. Lord said unfortunately he was unable to attend at the committee meeting through illness, He thought from the councillors' remarks at the last meeting that the increase was favoured. Cr. Mackay said the matter was very carefully gone into. They all agreed that it ivas their duty to see that the engineer had complete con trol of the men working for the coun cil, and if any man could write direct to the council over the enginer it would do away with all organisation. Cr. Roche said ,that according to his idea these men were not in the em ploy of the council at all. They were only casual men. It seemed a paltry thing to postpone. Cr. THE SUPPER. [Newspaper Article] — Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell Citizen — 12 June 1914

THE SUPPER. In the supper room, running paral lel wit·h the main hall, two long tables were laden with a tempting con glomeration of seemingly tasty edibles to meet the requirements of the epi curean. Jellies and salitds, and many more tishes of an agreeable flavour were much in evidence, and with the delicate piastry of cakes, etc., made qiuite a sumptuous repast. Wines and spirits were available for those who preferred Iliqueurs to the 'milder beverages--tea and coffee. Here, as in all parts of the hall, overcrowding was a very disagreeable feature, 'and the inconvenience of having to stand, because of the lack of seating accom modation, was very unpleasant to many, especially the women folk. However, the slight, trivial "discom forts were taken good-humouredly by the fashionably-dressed gathering, who regaled themsel\-es with manifest satisfaction. with the good things pro. ,ided by the hospitality of the genial host and hostesses, who, with the Lord and Lady Mayoress, occupied th...
