Federal Sparks, JUPITEK.' " The Country Famine Fund".should make ivii appropriate beading for a subscription list after the Common wealth celebrations. As there is likely to be a great shortage in hams during the festivities would it not be as well for Sir William Lyne .to order .ft few head of swine from Chicago—now that lie i3 on the foreign import question. . Ox and sheep tongues nro also said to be getting scarce in Sydney. When these become exhausted there are p.'enfcy of "legislator's tongues"—and. sumo of them are long enough for anything. Then again, a full-back could be made upon our central desert . pioneers .for the "sand-wich-is-in-them" —especially after a Lachlan shower. Country people will soon have to resort to eating yams instead of potatoes, as stocks are already being largoly bought up. The shortage of suppty in potatoes in this colony is now an assured fact, and in many towns the people are unable to pro cure this luxury, Sir William Lyne would not vote a sum of ...

Jimmy G-overnor. NOTES OH TRIAL. wnittjin foll the advocate by William Bkde Melville. Ifc required a 'ticket signed by no less a functionary than Sheriff o. S. B. Mawbury, to pass safely through floors and corridors into the Criminal Court, Darlinghurst, on the morning fixed for the trial of Jimmy Governor. Outside the broad freestone build ings, by the main entrance, on the asphalted approached, and overlapping the open lawn, pressed men and wo men, and youths and girls eager for a glimpse of Jimmy Governor ; but only a percentage had the Black gratifica tion, for the court room was not an amphi-theatre. When His Honor, Mr. Justice. Owen appeared, everybody rose more by tho force of example than by any impulse of courtesy due to a -Supremo Court Judge. His Honor seated him self squarely, and tho crowd subsided simultaneously. Assessment of Mines. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Advocate and Mining, Agricultural and Pastoral Gazette — 1 December 1900

Assessment of Min The following' is one of the letters read by -Mr. Channon at the meeting of miners held at Batman's Hotel hist week... ~ (To tho Editor, " Daily Telegraph.") Sir,—In the sub-leader of your issue of the. 7th inst. you appear to regard tho-proposal, that mines should be ex empt from municipal taxation a3 im practicable, yet tho Parliaments of Victoria and West Australia, recognis ing what mining has done, and is doing, for those colonies, have exempted mines from municipal taxation. They may be less wise than we, but where is the proof of it? The main contention of the Wyalong deputation was that mining should be treated like any other business in the matter of municipal assessment. It is fortunate that Mr. See lias recognised the justice of tho proposition, and it is to be hoped Parliament will endorse his action. It was shown that the few mines within tiio muuicipal bound aries of Wyalong, can, as the law now stands, be made to pay four-tilths of the whole of tho r...

Another Scene. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Advocate and Mining, Agricultural and Pastoral Gazette — 5 December 1900

.--Another Scene. The atmosphere gre.v very sultry in the Assembly about. 3 o'clock on Fri day morning. Mr Gook and Mr O'Sul livan got into verbal . contact every few minutes about the conduct of business. The former's complaint was that Mr See had promised to adjourn at a reasontble hour, but that the Minister for Works still kept bringing : up fresh proposals. Mr Cook wi^; pleasantly called a ' bafd-headed buf-' fer by Mr. O'Sullivan, and he retorted by saying he was happy to say he was not a • puffod-up pudding-heud ' like the hon. Minister. After this there was a quiet interval, during which Mr O'Sullivan got one or two more pro posals through. Mr Gormley charac terised all such legislation as farcical, and wondered when the Minister would come to the end of his string of railways and flood prevention schemes. Mr. Cook then again got on to the topic of Ministers breaking their word, and presently was called an ' absolute liar' by Mr. O'Sullivan. If they were outside ho would sho...
