During the visit Mr. Kingston the Premier of South Australia, made to Dublin it is said that being one morning at Westland-row Railway Station and finding a large number of people there, he naturally and modestly concluded that they had come out in his honour. He forthwith improved the occasion by delivering a neat little speech, in which he thanked the officials for their courtesy and the town folk for their evident sympathy with the colony he represented. The truth was that the people had assembled to pay respect to the mortal remains of a well-known citizen, which were about to be transported by'rail to their last rest ing place. The ora...

DR. EMIL REICH ON THE NEW JEW. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

DR. EMIL REICH ON THE NEW JEW. In another column we print a full abstract of the paper which Dr. Emil Reich has written for the August number of the Nineteenth Century. The essayist wager, a polemic against the new type of Jew — Jewish in race, but in nothing else. It is indeed an extraor dinary phenomenon to find several such Jews taking a front position in the movement initiated by Dr. Herlz. Dr. Reich maintains that the distinction of a race are a race. There is no Semetic race, he says. '' The nations talking Semetic languages have at all times so profoundedly differed from one another that nothing short of wilful blindness to facts can consider them as constituting one and the same stock of people with essentially the same qualities. The 'Semitic' race will disappear,- as has the 'Doric' or 'Pelasgic,' and as will the 'Celtic' and the 'Saxon 'race. In fact, among white men there are no permanent 'races.' They are all of the same kind; and their vast differ ences in institutions...

OBITUARY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

OBITUARY. Mr. I. Barnett, Dowling-street, Moore Park, received news by telegram on Monday last of the death of his sister Annie Barnett, at Bris bane. The deceased lady had been ailing for some considerable time. In her last communi cation to Mr. Barnett, she wrote of the kind attention the Mr. Benjamin of Warwick had paid her during her residence with them at Warwick. Mr. S. B. Harris attains his minority, and Master Rupert Harris his Barmitzvah in the same week. A peculiar coincidence in a family. We offer them our best wishes. Mr. M. A. Cohen, M.A., has tutored Master Rupert. The services at Mr. Levy's residence at Daviesville, near Wellington, is much appre ciated by our co-religionists in the country. Such happy sacrifices tend to the best advan tages of Judaism. The Synagogue which has for its Rabbi a brother who knows the work and performs it impressively ; who knows the Judaic law, and executes it impartially ; who is paternal a& well as fraternal in his oversight of...

WHAT DO YOUR CHILDREN READ? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

WHAT DO YOUR CHILDREN READ ? Do you know ? You know what they eat, and are careful to provide the right food- and plenty of it. But do you know, parents, what your children read ? Do you take pains to know what they read and provide them with the right kind of reading matter, and plenty of it ? Has it ever occurred to you that to be indifferent in this respect, or to deny your children good reading matter, is to starve them mentally, or perhaps poison them. Parents never think of starving their children physically. To poison them or starve them would be inhuman. Is it less inhuman to starve them mentally ?

He meets the smile of young and old, he wins the praise of all, He is feasted at the banquet and distinguished at the ball; When town grows dull and sultry, he may fly to green retreats, A welcome visitor in turn at twenty country seats. He need not seek society, for, do whate'er he can Invitations will pursue the Single Man. Eve of Atonement [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

Eys of Atonement Oration and Prayer by Rev. J. H. Landau. The night has come ushering in Israel's most sacred day. From out the busy world, where all our thoughts have been intent on work and gain and pleasure, we have bent our steps towards this sacred fane. We have come here, I hope, profoundly dissatisfied with our poor lives, our eyes open wide to the tawdriness, the ugliness of our past. We have come here, I hope, tired of the illusion of sin, tired of its shams and glitter ; tired of its bread, which is not bread ; tired of its cisterns, broken cisterns, which will hold no water for our thirst ; tired of the regrets, the struggle, the falling ; tired of the years which the locust hath eaten The life of man is a vagrant changeful desnltoriness ; like that of children sporting on an enamelled meadow, chasing now a painted butterfly which loses its charm by being caught, now a wreath of mist which falls damp upon the hand with disappointment, now a feather of thistledown which is...
