CORRESPONDENCE.   [We do not necessarily endorse the opin- ions expressed by our correspondents.] [TO THE EDITOR OF THE MINING RECORD.] SIR—Allow me, through the columns of   your valuable journal, to throw a little extra light upon a recent occurrence in which my wife lately figured at the Police Court—I   allude to the case in which she was found guilty of stealing a turkey. It is the boast of Englishmen that no one should be found guilty of an offence till both sides of the question have been heard. I, unfortunately, being the husband of the de- fendant, and the only person present at the time of the occurrence, could not give evi- dence, or probably the Police Magistrate would have taken a different view of the case ; and when I endeavoured (in certainly a rambling manner, in consequence of my agitation) to elicit some most important facts in cross-examination from the prosecutrix, I was called to order by the Bench, with the observation th...

      GRENFELL MINING REPORT.   The crushing of the first 100 tons from the     prospecting claim of the Lucknow reef will     be completed this evening at Mathison's, and     judging from the amalgam taken from the   machine, up to yesterday morning, the yield will exceed 500 ounces—or five ounces to the   ton. Kirkpatrick's machine finished a crush-   ing of something under 100 tons from No. 1   Welcome on Thursday evening, which pro-   duced 124 ounces. This machine is now   crushing stone from the Leased ground (Luck- now Hill), and Mathison's will com- mence on Monday next on a lot of 100 tons from No. 1 South, Lucknow.
