A PLEA FOR CONSCRIPTION. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 14 October 1916

A PLEA FOR CONSCRIPTION. ZBy F. T. lHickford, II.A. i The ,fundamental principle of con script'ion is that where there ;re equal Isights .there should be equal l urdens. Austrilia, exaptly exempli fies this proposition. Nowhere is there is more amp?lc franchise, now where such cs.al opportunities. Every man carries a possible Prime Minis-. ter's portfolic.- Mr. HugheS would be the first to admit this. The .q(lestion is whether the privileges Australians enjoy would be impossible under OGer man domination. There can be only one. answer to this question. But the present generation has: somethiag higher to consider than the sole re gard for its own circumstances. The present is really the trustee of the future, and such trusteeship carries w'ith it q)ligations of the most sac red character. All ourindustrial and social reforms become mere foam on 6he moving waste of waters unless our national existence is absolutely secured. The remark of Cromwell that, "being comes b'lefore well-be in...

MORE SOX WANTED. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 14 October 1916

MORlE SOX WANTED. It is as well to remind all whose hearts are in the trenches that sox are more and more necessary to our men as the winter advances (says the Leader), and if they are sent to the'league rooms, in the Town HIall, they will be forwarded withlout delay direct to Commissioner Budden'for distribution among our lads where need is greatest. Some of the worst reading in our recent letters from the front has been the stories told of feet pealed almost bare of skin because of no soex, or worn out sox, when marching in tcrminsble miles over hard rocks in F:irance.' IE a sufficient supply of sox could be forthcoming our,men would be spared: the hardest~ of their unnecessary hardslhips. Of course, the sox sent to the Red Cross Society. do not go to the fighting miei; they are distributed among t.he sick ind wounded. It is really the men in the trenches who most sorely need 'the sox? and they receive their extra supplies through the Australian Comforts funds, whose branches are ...

LEPTERS TO THE EDITOR. We do not hold ourselves relponasible for, or identity ourselves with, the opinleons expressled by oir corre?pondents. MUNICIPAL EXPERIENCE. Sir,-It is interesting to note how quickly facts alter theories. When the Fairfield election committee, at their monthly meeting of progress, met each "month, there was a class always ready to replace sitting councillors who did not keep the district in excellent order. It was nonsense to them to talk of over drafts or anything else but improvement. In such a temperament they found a candidate in Mr May, to whom it? wems delightful to speak of the rest of the shire using Fairtield moneyl , &:.. and btr hard graft on his own accou it, assistied by the above commuittee, he got elected by a substantial vote. Now for:facts. He finds that the l'airfield riling could not have more done toit becaiuse of wart of funds, and he further statesithat ome * cannot be done unless more buildings; o up and more taxation enforced, ...

CROQUET. PRESENTATION AND UNFURLING OF THE C PENNANT. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 21 October 1916

CROQUET. PRESENIATION AND UNFURL . ING OF THI? U PENNANT. Last Saturday afternoon an interesting event occurred at the Ivanhoe Associa tion's pavilion, when the C pennaut, won by the croquet section, was presented and unfurled. There was a good attendance, Mrs H. Burrell, the president, being in cluded. Mr E. Wallis, the president of the association, introduced Mr A. 3B. Were, the president of the Victorian Croquet Association, to the company, and thanked him for his kindness in coming out to Ivanhoe to perform the ceremony. Mr Were was heartily received, and said that he was very pleased to have the honor, and congratulated the Ivanhoo club on their suecess. He explained, as president of the Croquet Association, that the gamne was now established on a firm basis. Instead of each club being a law unto itself, a set of rules and regu lations had been adopted by the associa tion, and the future of the pastime was now assured. When Mr Wece pulled the halyards and thepennant flated to t...
