Our Railway. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 17 July 1908

Our Railway. On Friday last, Pr. Edwardea. shire secretary, received a telegram to the effect that the time for 16dging protect c?_ainst the proposed district to be taxed in con nection with the railway had exuireu. As was expected, notwithatiuding the large amount of tall talk, no opposition has been offered. It is stated thatthe work of con struction will bhe in full awing ahout sia weeks hence, and take four-and-a.-l,l, months to complete. This will bring us very near the new year, when it is to be hoped those who have been fighting for the past 40 years for the line will have the pleasure of knowing that their long and arduous task has been accomplished. While many persons appear to be on the tip-toe of excitement in regard to the ex tension, it might be mentioned that Messrs Clark and KIidd have been more than keeping pace with the times. Being con. fident that the line was a certainty, fur. ther extensive work has been carried out at the Rubicon mills so that the many large or...

Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, JULY 17, 1908. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 17 July 1908

SlJ andra & n ftaitda d NEC TZMERE NEC TIMIDL FRIDAY, JULY 17, 1908,. IN a recent review a well-known American writer draws attention in a forcible manner' to the great necessity existing in Australia for settling people on the land, and, in the course of his remarks, makes a characteristic American suggestion, namely, that in order to attract immigrants of the 'agricultural class to our shores, blocks of land might either through the Government or by private enterprise be sub-divided and prepared for settle ment. At present the offers of land which are waiting development are too indefinite, and if the areas were clearly defined and ready to take up, the chances of securing settlers from various parts of the world would be greatly enhanced. To point out on a map the unoccupied lands, and invite immigrants to go into the bush and carve out a home for themselves, as the old pioneers have done, savors too much of a policy of indifference re garding land settlement, and should b...

Marysville. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 17 July 1908

Maryville.   (From our own Correspondent). The recent fall of snow which was the heaviest known here by old residents has disappeared at last from the lower country, although it will still remain in the hills for some time. The weather is now fine with frosts. Some of the low condition stock, especially milkers and poddies have come down from the hills and are having a bad time. A football match representing teams from Buxton and Narbethong v Marys- ville will be played here on Saturday next. The new Royal mail contractors have started running in their respective ends, viz., Messrs Lindstrom, Healaville, and Stillman, Alexandra. Mr J. Payne's coach is still on the road, with Mr J. Hill on the box. Several of the leading residents are of the opinion that the time is now oppor- tune to push forward the claims of this and adjacent districts to be benefited by the Healsville-Alexandra railway and send a deputation to wait on the Minister, with this object.
