Robbing, one of the Fine Arts. [Newspaper Article] — Table Talk — 4 September 1885

Robbing, one of the Fine Arts. Turn Hotliam Bank Robbery was lilco the murder of the "Duke D'Enghien, worse than a, crime ; it was n blunder. The bubble blown by Robinson in order to aooouiit for the absenoo of the money " was so soon priolced " and the culprit " caved in" so speedily, that it seems unintelligible how any body could have been fool onough to initiate such a poor thing in bank robbing. So quickly was the swindle " done for"—we wonder what it was begun for. The Oollingwood bank robbers were made of sterner .stuff than Mr. Robinson. Their-'deed, was well planned and ably carried out, and where they broke down was in that most difficult part of all. crimes—the hiding of the plunder. There was pluck in their case, there is none in Robinson's. The very place in which he hid the money- had already been selected as a suitable locality by his prodocessor Gorbett, There is one question, however, which the present case will revive, wo are glad to say, and that is the miserable ...

Marriage a-la-Mode. [Newspaper Article] — Table Talk — 4 September 1885

Marriage a-la-Mode. CJomi'Ija.int is, frequently made that the divorce law of England, on which ours is based, is so cumbrous in character that it can only be resorted to by the wealthy men, and that the '.Divoroe Court' is praotioally barred to the poor. No doubt the objection is to some extent well founded, but the dnngers which would be incurred by relaxing the rigor ofc' the law may bo illustrated by the suit of Wilkinson v. Wilkinson, which was dooided the o'ther day. As a piece of im pudent bare-faced effrontery, this case unquestion ably bears the palm. The petitioner was a young man named William John Henry Wilkinson, in the employment of the Telegraph '.Department, and he olaimed a decree annulling his marriage with his wife, Ellen Teresa Wilkinson. The details disclose as: unnatural conduct on the part of the petitioner as was ever brought before, a court of justice. It appeared from his own state ment that some years ago he was on terms of intimaoy with the respondent, th...

Table Talk. It is always gratifying to soo one's journalistic enterprise appreciated by the public, but tho gratification is intensified when ti tribute of praise comes also from fellow workers in the thorny field of press literature. That our efforts to establish a thoroughly representative Sooiety Journal havo received ample recognition from the class of readers for whom it'was more particularly designed oan not bo doubted; and the general press throughout the colony has welcomed Table Talk with the warmest and most spontaneous oordiality. The' latest contribution to the flattering encomiums so liberally bestowed on us by other, journals, is tho following which appeared in last Saturday's Mel bourne Daily Telegraph Table Talk, a sooiety paper, which has reached its tenth'number, has, wo observe from the very numerous testimonials from our contemporaries, met with tho warm commen dation of the Press.
