NEW ZEALAND "ADVANCED" LEGISLATION. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 19 March 1895

NEW ZEALAND 'ADVANCED' ^ ' LEGISLATION, Hew Zealand in now often quoted as the most 'advanced1* colony id regard to legislation ; but the following extract from an address by Mr W. Crowlher, M.H.R., to h-s coustiluents lets a flood of light of Government Bills that were ru jected : — ' He produced a bulky volume. the size of which provoked laughter, and which he said wan formed of Bills pre seo'ted last eension.firHtta^iog the Imprison ment for Debt Bill. This means, be said, that all could go into debt as much as they Itlced ; tbera was no imprisonment for debt, and people would not pay their debts. (Laughter.) It simply boycotted contractors. The Betterment Bill had been put on .the shelf, one clause in it giving the Government power to alter it and amend it, without consulting anyone. The Hawker's a Pedlar's Bill meant that do one with money could become a hawker or pedlar ; or, aa soms thought, even a commercial traveller, until he had been in the colony twelve months. That was ...

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. Narandera Hospital. To the Editor of the Narandera Argus. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 19 March 1895

OBIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. Harandera Hospital. 3\- the Editor ef the Iforandera Argut. Bib,— The proceedings at Parliament, Church, Hospital, and other meetings do not, as a rule, show the race in a v«ry favorable light, and the adjourned commit, tee meeting «f the Narandera Hospital was certainly oo exception to the rule ? I stand aghast at some of the p'Oposalu made at this meeting; and marvel at the support they reoaiveJ. It seems to rue very clear that tboso who were in sym pathy with such proposals considered the best interests «F the Hospital of secondary importance. After these gentlemen had played all thnir hands one of them— the the inoVer of the 1st renolution — turned right round and proposed the only courst open for them to take under the circum stances. Aa a well-wisher of the Hospital I am glad thut the evident purpose of those gentlemen w«9 frustrated, and that the meeting adopted this course which was the only one (hey dare adopt, in face of the distinct wish of the su...

THE LAND AND INCOME TAX BILL. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 19 March 1895

THE L&»D AWD INCOME TAX BILL. The Land and Iacome Tax Assess ment Bill hus passed throagb Committee in the Assembly, and as it is hardly likely to meet with a fatal reversecn the. third reading, although it ii^aj; expect -a -good many ? hard knocks, it i§ practically done TTit.h so far as the Lower Honse is concerned. The Bill, if ever it .becomes lavr, will stand as a monument of the want of principle on jlje part of the Raid Government. The only scientific and just exemption proposed — that embodied in Mr Wise's amendment — was killed by the Premier's appeal to class prejudice. An arbitrary ex empting of £475 was subsequently inserted by a pliant Crorernnent in obedience to the dictation of the Labtjr IWty. Since then the Bill has b,een farther disfigared by a pro vision which in effect enacts that if a man is extravagant or unfortunate to an extent that it becomes necessary to mortgagfe his |and he will be freed from taxation np to the amount of the mortgage, while . » ma...

The whole route from Go vernment Bruise to the cemetery was densely packed with spectators, num bering- folly a quarter of a million, together with the bright uniforms of the. array and navy. The gnn car riages were covered with piles of wreaths. The long line of cabs, car riages, and other vehicles made a most imposing- scene.
