Britain's Wheat Fields. [Newspaper Article] — Ashburton Guardian — 14 May 1906

Britain's Wheat Fields. CANADA'S PRODUCTION. Mr G. Allen, of Waiangaro, giving the "N.Z. Farmers' Journal " an account of his recent trip through Canada, says New Zealand may as well give up all ideas of growing wheat for the English, market. If New Zealand keeps herself supplied with bread and exports, the best qualities of dairy produce, frozen moat, flax, etc, she wili have fulfilled what is expected of lur. When she has done that satisfactorily she may will leave the filling of the * world's bread basket ' to such countries as Canada. It is difficult for anyone to grasp the possibilities of that vast country and particularly its Nor'-Wesfc Territory or Wheat Belt. In 1904 60,000,000 bushels of wheat was grown on an area of three and three quarter million aores. This, I am told, may be considered a minimum in Western Canada's wheat production; and 24,000,000 aores with a proportionate yield may be considered a msximun, or 60 times as much as was produced...

Whose Fault Is It? [Newspaper Article] — Ashburton Guardian — 14 May 1906

Whose Fault Is It? Let Ashburton Readers Decide the Question. When a fog horn warns the mariner to steer off the coast, if he still hogs the coast and wrecks upon it, whose fault is it? If the red switch liyht ia up and the engir c deliberately pull. ahead into another train, blame the driver. If a careless workman will, in spite of warning, try to find out how many teeth a buzz saw has, and th 6 saw tried to find how many lingers the workman has, blame the workman not the saw. It Ashburton people who have kidney complaint and backache will not take Doan's Bae'^acho Kidney Pills when they are endorsed by scores of citizens, blame tbo people not the medicine. Mis James Parker, Eaton Street, Hampstead, this town says:—"l could not do my housework or washing because of backache. As soon as ever I started the pains became so very agonising that I would have to lie down. This was a dreadful state of affairs for me, and it probably would have continued only I procured a bos o...
