Tom Parker s _~>; _^^«^ .. ;; .. s . _^ Brazil Coup Helps Save Alliance for Progress [Newspaper Article] — F&M College Reporter — 1 May 1964

Tom Parker s _~>; _^^«^ .. ;; .. s . _^ Brazil Coup Helps Save Alliance for Progress When it was learned that a military coup had overthrown President Goulart of Brazil , the first impression was that this might be a typical Latin American revolt of the type which leads to a dictatorship . If one evaluates the facts of the matter , it appears that this coup saved Brazil from a Communist takeover scheduled for May 1 . The revolt last fall of non-commissioned naval and air force officers was the result of Communist agitation . Goulart sought to strengthen Russian bloc relations at the cost of U . S friendship and pursued a policy of non-alignment in world affairs In a policy friendly to Cuba , the National Union of Students sent youth to Cuba and elsewhere to leam Communist tactics of revolt Middle-Class Support Unlike many revolutions in this continent it had the strong support of the middle class and its mam goal was to strengthen the economy and to support the free enter...

Not long ago a freshman at this _, college offered to one of his instructors as a reason for cutting more than half of the classes the brilliant insight that he was not getting much out of the course . To be sure the course , a required one , might not be much of an exper ience , but this young gentleman s testimony as expert witness is , to say the least , doubtful The point of the anecdote is applicable to the notion of student apathy , which , it seems to me , is another cliche called to order and demonstrate a set of dissatisfactions saved up like dirty socks by a group of young Utopians who are here to get through , get ahead , and live the good life , in that ill-defined and drearily pre-cut order . Student Apathy To adduce meaning from a label like student apathy can be no more fruitful than sleeping on a book t...
