Farmers' Organizations . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 April 1906

Farmers Organizations . I he grange re-organization movement now in progress throughout the country- should be welcomed and forwarded in every possible way by the women in our farming communities . The benefits of such an organization as the grange to farmers and farmers families are incalculable . First there is the pleasure of social intercourse at the meetings , and anything tending to increase sociability among farmers families is greatly to be desired . Then there is the feeling engendered by such meetings and interchanges of ideas and experiences that impresses farmers with their common interest , which is necessary if they are to pull together as they should in any movement for securing legislation particularly needed by them as a class . Workmen , tradesmen , professional men arid capitalists organize , why should not the fanners ? Indeed , there is every reason , why they should . This is of course the higher and ultimate purpose of the grange , but even if it went no furth...

Language Lessons . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 April 1906

Language Lessons . VII . By Way of Reminders . Shall and will ! Should and would ! How they elude us ; just as we think we have learned all the in s and out s , and that we never will use one word for the other again , we find that we have reckoned without some of our If s and When s . If we wish to express simple futurity , shall is used in the first person , and will in the second and third persons . I shall not be late ; you will have time enough too . Where your treasure is , there will your heart be , also . Should and would are past tense forms of shall and will , and are used according to the rules for the latter words . I should think that you would like the city . In telling what another said , one must remember that when you were speaking , you were first person and said I shall ; that I was second person and to me , you said You will . It is correct to say You said that you should go . You said that I would go . He said that he should go . He said that you and I would go ...

HATPy HILL FATIM [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 April 1906

HATPy HILL FATIM By MRS . C . C . WOUTEHS Iff THE STm / fG TIME . • Can you sew on a button for me , little woman ? John , who was supposed to be on the way to the field for a half day s harrowing , entered the kitchen unexpectedly , to find that usually tidy room covered with pots and pans of every description . What in thunder— he began , glancing around in search of Mary . He discovered her on a chair in the pantry , one of his red handkerchiefs over her head , taking down a row of bottles . What you making the house so dirty for ? he demanded . Looks like a cyclone s been around . Going to move ? You silly boy ! Didn t you ever see anybody clean house before ? said Mary , a little provoked . Clean house ! You always have a clean house . That is , till today . If you call this a clean house- — But Mary was in no mood for chaffing . She had the weight of housecleaning on her mind , and had planned to do it so that the house would be tidy and comfortable whenever John was around—at...

The Science of Coo fiery [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 April 1906

The Science of Coo fiery ¦ By MISS MAUX LISTETt . VI . DrlnKing Water and Ice Supplies . In general , when speaking of good water we mean water which is odorless , transparent and which docs not , on standing , deposit a sediment . But this does not tell all of the story for some very impure water—unfit for doemstic use is colorless , odorless and transparent . This may be true , when salts of Ammonia , the nitrates or nitrites are found in the water . They , themselves , are not harmful but they are formed when dead organic matter is or has been present . The impurity may not be present when examined but it has been there as proven by the salts and may find its way there again . This organic matter may not be harmful in small quantities but it is certainly objectionable . Simple forms of animal life are often found in water . These are not of importance in the health equation so far as we know . The eggs of parasitic animals are sometimes found and are not so harmless . Tiny plants...

KECITES [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 April 1906

KECITES Waffles . So few Americans make waffles . Is it because it costs a little to buy the waffle-irons ? They will last a life-time , and as regards tastiness and healthfulness there is no comparison between the waffle and the pancake so universally made for breakfast . Buy the irons next time you go to town . Make a batter just as you do for pancakes . Grease the irons well , top and bottom , and don t put in too much batter . A brisk fire and a little watchfulness will do the rest . Serve with butter and brown sugar , or cream and sugar , or maple syrup . Busy Bee . Tot Roast . Perhaps some of the farmers wives who read this are as ignorant as I was a few years ago , when I hadn t , the slightest idea what a pot roast was . Most any beef that is not exceptionally tender and tasty is better as a pot roast than oven roasted or plain boiled . Take your big iron kettle and put it on the fire with two orthree tablespoons of fat—pork frv , ings are best . When the fat is hot put in t...
