ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1875

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS . Mrs . R . G . Manteno 111 . You are correct in your supposition that the little white worms in your flower pots are the young of the minute flics which so swarm at times in . the air about the plants . . The flies lay eggs upon the stems of the plants at the surface of the ground , from which the maggots hatch , attaining a length of a quarter of an inch in from two to three weeks , during which time they feed voraciously upon the fleshy parts ( bulbs & c . ) of the plants , after which they change to pupa ; , then in a day or two to flies again . There are two remedies . Water may be applied hot enough to kill the worms without injury to the plants , but there is danger of using it too hot . , The best way is to turn the plants out and wash with warm w . i ; .. r the entire dirt from the roots , then re-pot in fresh earth . No poison * can be used with effect not destructive to the plants . The fly is allied to the one causing so much havoc a...

EDITORIAL [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1875

EDITORIAL According to the Hillsboro Journal , this is the way they make scientific farmers out of our young men at the Agricultural College at Chamrjaign : They take the young men cut in the spring of the year and compel them to sit on the fence with kid gloves on their hands umbrellas over their heads and fifteen cent cigars in their mouths , and there watch the men who are employed to do the work at twenty dollars a month , a « they turn the stubborn glebe for the ccming crop . This is hard on the young gentlemen but they learn to fin m , yen know , and that is what the institution is for . They analyze the soil , probe crawfish holes , call doodle-bugs from their secure retreats , dissect horseflies , and pursue their investigations into various other branches , the knowledge of which goes to make up the scientific farmer . They actually spent $ 15 , 000 in one year in determining the various points of difference between a gnat ar . d a musquito . This money belonged to people o...
