THE IDEAL . WAGON BOX . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 26 January 1907

THE IDEAL . WAGON BOX . All wagons are , in a sense , grain boxes . The box which has given us the best satisfaction for several years past is the grain-wagon box . These have a flange which extends outward about six inches , on either side , over the standards . They are extensively used by grain men in the larger cities and towns . All farmers have undoubtedly seen them but few have appeared to consider their adaptability to general farm use . We have found them to be excellent boxes for farm purposes and have used no other for the past twelve years . When one of the older boxes becomes too dilapidated for further use another will take its place . We have found that they can be put to any purpose where an ordinary box can be used . The greatest advantage is in the large capacity which makes the use of racks unnecessary in the hauling of smaller grains . This alone is worth considering as racks are an expensive item , espeehilly when a new set has to be purchased every few years ; ...

( LIVESTOCK [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 26 January 1907

( LIVESTOCK WINTER TREATMENT OF BEEP CATTLE . There are in Ohio many farmers who occupy farms of fifty to one hundred , to two or three hundred acres of land , who generally fatten several steers and cows during the winter . As to confining these cattle in the stable at all times , and watering them in the stall , is it best to do this ? Many fanners say , by no means ; let them out for water and exercise . For many years , on both sides of the Atlantic , I have done this very thing . When cattle have a good barn , as warm and comfortable as need be , and have had a full ration of good feed in a clean , well-bedded stall , to turn them out to drink their fill of cold , and very often , ice water , and let them remain in the yard for hours , looking at the stable , shivering with cold , it seems to me a . set-back , and the feed given them mostly wasted . Not many farmers do it . Such had better try it on themselves on a cold morning , and see what effect it will have on their system...

WHOLE GRAIN VS . GROUND FEED . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 26 January 1907

WHOLE GRAIN VS . GROUND FEED . Doubtless a good deal of energy and power is wasted at times grinding and crushing grain for stock . I believe this to be emhatically true in the case of corn-and-cob meal . It requires a great outlay of power to crush the cob and the cost is far beyond the feeding value the cob affords . I know that carefully conducted experiments in feeding corn-and-cob meal and clear corn meal have shown better results from the corn-and-cob meal , but it is thought that this was not on account of any added nutritive value derived from the cob , but because the corn-and-cob meal being lighter and less concentrated , was more easily digested and assimilated than the clear corn meal . But why grind either corn or cob ? I have noticed in the droppings of steers fed heavily on corn meal , plenty of the coarser particles that were passed undigested , and this was lost because the hogs could not get it , whereas had they been fed whole corn the two would have picked up eve...

THE SMALL . CATTLE FEEDER . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 26 January 1907

THE SMALL . CATTLE FEEDER . The small cattle feeder , that feeds one or two loads of cattle , generally feeds to a disadvantage by not having his feed lots properly arranged and constructed . My idea of the feed lot is to have it small , so as to have it wholly covered with corn stalks , or if larger , to have the land slope to the southeast , then build a tight board fence on the west and north , five feet high , for a windbreak . In the northwest corner set two rows of post for a cheap storm shed . The posts should be spaced in rows 14 feet apart one way apd 18 feet the other way ; 4 posts on a side spaced thus will make shed 18 x 42 feet . With poles spiked on top lengthwise and other poles crosswise , to throw rails on , you are ready for the roof , which may be of straw or threshed timothy hay . Plank shed up on west and north and leave it open on the south . Now as to arranging feed boxes . Build boxes or manger along west and north fences . The floor of manger should be 24 in...

ABOUT THE STOCKER TRADE . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 26 January 1907

ABOUT THE STOCKER TRADE . In an extended talk with well-post-ed cattle men I find that they are of the opinion that stockers will be higher this spring than at any time in years . The cutting up of the Texas and Arizona cattle ranges by the railroads has restricted the supply and the tendency is for further restrictions of supplies for their fountain heads . Farmers find that they can make as much , if not more money by selling their veal calves , as holding them to the stocker stage . As the majority of the shippers and farmers are looking for quick money , it is evident that but few wait for the long-line end . The present view is for higher prices on beef cattle in the near future and owners of stockers are advised to hold them until spring and be well paid for the difference in time . Just now there Is a fair demand for strictly choice stockers and feeders to fill the wants of a few who happen to need them , but when there is a large supply of common stuff the market is slow ana...
