Next 1o the bubject of religion, iuvolving our eternal well being, nothing should interest us so much as the subject of llyjricue ami Med iciue, iuvolriug our temporal hap piness. Yet the notions of most persons on medicine are so crude and false, that it may truly be said, 7 they are living in heathenish dark J ness medically, not excepting a sin gle one of the professional men of the Old School. The remarks which I expect to make in these brief papers will jus tify fully this statement. The science of medicine may be said to hare arisen in the following manner: From the earliest times, whenever any person was seized with a mala dy, uothiug was more natural than to J rt; different substances, plants or minerals, administering them to the unfortunate fellow.-beiug, to see whether they would not stop his pain and arrest the disease (I want -i the gentle reader to uotice especially v this word "fry.") Tji k. &' v o, V w li- Iry aK Antiquarian Care i Olile. The Ohio Valley, ami this imme diate section iu particular, is rich in remains of that wonderful pre-his-toric race, the evidences of whose civilization have been perpetuated in those curious pieces of engineering from which is derived the euphon ious name "Mound Builders," given them by archaeologists. Within the past few days wonderful discoveries have been made in this vicinity which open up a new chapter in the history of this remarkable race, and yirow much light upon their man ner of living, their character, their social habits and their physical na ture. In different sections of the world, and at divers times, there have been found the remains of a gigantic fauna and flora, and of human kind of enormous size. So rare And far apart have been these discoveries, however, that we have looked upon historical accounts of them as clearly constructed pieces of fiction, and been loth to believe that there ever existed a man a...

- - Yrr t 'S 13 O What In UomcofKilky V 1'AUT III. Ii has also beeu found that the really curative action of a drug is developed only by the process of attenuation or dilution. When Hahnemann first discovered the Law of Similars (1790), he uBed the xrdiuary dose. He found, however, that the first effect was an exacerba tion (getting worse) of the symp toms, after which followed the reaction and cure. It occurred to him to reduce the dose, and in 60 doing found that the cure followed the more rapidly. Thus he gradu ally arrived at the system of attenu ation called Poteutization, which is as follows: One part of the drug with 99 parts of alcohol is the first potency; oue part of the first po tency with 99 parts of alcohol is the second potency, &c. The first po tency contains one-hundredth of the drug, the second contains one hun dredth of one-hundredth one ten- ;.V0 thousanth. This process has been 4 carried as high as the 30th potency, and some physicians nse as high as the 200t...

Fifteen years ago there was a no table meeting in the city of London, England, composed of some of the wealthiest and most cultured men in the realm.
