Terrifie Doing.. Three, four, or more murders, perpetrated in the same week, or following very closely one on the other, and committed in the Third DIs tratc, alarmed quite a number of the lowly res. Idents, who, feirful of a sitnilar faite, hastily retmoved therefrom. We were of the opinion that the blood then so recklessly shed, would arouse a greater degree of vigilance on the part of the authorities and the psliee, and that the commission of further dirkings, shootings and murders, would be unheard of aid un known. But we erred; as, since the , we have heard of persons having beienu sung slotted and stabbed, yet no arrests followed, nor were parties even suspected. Such was (and is, we presnme,) the trepidla tlon prevailing on Enghien street and that portion of Victory where the rfltle had been held, that almost ns soon as night set in, the stores hind private dwellings were closed, and few of the inmates ventured ablroad. What added to their terror was a report spread shout tha...

Hlow far we have been mistaken in the Intelligence, character, and self respect, of some of these persons, may he readily judged from the low aung and vulgar slang of the partneriship of "Rip Ran." e _ dui n ýemýQY at. THE SABBATH. The followinq exquisite little poem is from "Bread," the recently published work of Mrs. Ellen Key Blunt, of Baltimore: Creatorl God! Almighty King! Enthroned In light beyond the skyl What can the earth for tribute bring To glorify thy Majesty? Her treasures are but moth and rust; Her incense dies-her gold is dust. We stop the countless pulse of Time; The mighty breadth of Earth we stay We stand in rest before thy shrine, We offer Thee thy Sabbath day! Uncrowned her kings before Thee how; In silence Nature hails Thee iow! And Thou! as chime and chant arise, Marking the holy time for Thee, Thou dost receive it in the skies, And makes it Eternity! Oh, hasten, Lord the Sabbath day, Whose light shall never pass away! Ohristmas, BY JANIET HALE. But the young, young children, 0 my brothers, Thty are weeping bitterly!
