Gearing A White, the enterprising gentlemen who erected the new gas works at Sa cramento, together with a number of our prominent citizens, and accompa nied by a special reporter from the Herald, left this city for the San Fernando oil regions. The principal object of their visit is to ascertain by personal inspection the character of the oil product, and the prospect of ob taining a cheap and ample supply of petroleum, suitable for the manufac ture of a good quality of gas for illum inating purposes. Mr. Gearing informs us that in Pennsylvania, in the very midst of immense beds of the best coal in the world, gas is now manufactured from petroleum, because it i 9 both better and cheaper for that purpose, and he believes that if t...

The Star has been ln the habit for some time of publishing, under the bead of "Special Telegrams to the Star," the regular dispatches received by all the papers of this city, as well as those of Santa Barbara and San Diego. We have said nothing about this little fraud, as it deceives no one, and only raised a laugh at the expense of that paper. But latterly we have occasionally noticed "special dis patches" in that journal that on ex amination could not be found iv any other paper of the same date on the .Pacific coast, most of them, however, having a familiar appearance, as if we bad read them some time ago, and partially forgotten them. Ou Friday morning last we detected aud exposed the transparent fraud by which an e...

The Administration journals, in the East, * nftt na( * no wor(1 of condemna tion for the nomination of the politi cian Williams, are furious at the sub stitution of Cushing's name. This is no more than was to be expected. There is no position, in the eye of the regular political organ, that ought not to be used to reward a political mana ger, and no matter what the fitness of the man, he has not in their opinion, a particle of right to hold au office, un less he has rendered the appointing power, services in the caucus or on the stump. As an advertising medium it is consequently of DOUBLE their value. A Flexible Currency. The New York Mercantile Journal, one of the leading commercial news papers of the United States, has for a number of years been urging with a great deal of vigor and ability the pol icy of adopting a currency which shall be a legal tender for all demands, pub lic and private, and interchangeable at the option of the holder for govern ment bonds, bearing a low rate of in terest. The Journal contends that gold and silver are really articles of merchan dise, and that an attempt to base a currency on them has proven a fail ure, but that if greenbacks were re ceivable for all dues to the govern ment, Including customs, and could at any time be changed for interest bearing bonds, the popular confidence In the stability of the government, would bring them up very nearly t...

As an advertising medium It is consequently of DOUBLE their value. The Herald. In October the first issue of the Her ald was sent into the world. It was then determined to spare no reasonable expense to make in every respect the Herald a complete suc cess, and a paper that would do honor to Los Angeles, as well as its proprie tors. We determined to be honest, fear less, independent, and to let the paper rise or fall on that basis. We knew that those papers which had been heretofore occupying the held had notoriously sold their pen and paper to the highest bidder — and that price, not principle, was their guiding impulse. We thought that there were enough honest, well minded citizens to support a journal represent ing their sentiments. It was our hope to establish a jour nal whioh should live in the future, when the grand country so...
