THE SEN TINEL, T'HE TILDEN MOVEMENT. Gov. Carlisle, well know in political tirales for the correctness of his prognos tications of coming events, had this to way in a recent interview : "I tell you Tilden is looming up. If he does not get the nomination himself he will name the man that does. The old mnan has a long head and knows what be is doing. He may be no ainated by acclamation-there is no telling. Next to himself I think he favors B tyard, who is very strong in the East, and per. haps could carry New York, New Jersey and Connetiout. Judge Field, a great personal friend of Mr. Tilden, is also spo ken of as a possible compromise. Seymour has been spoken of, but he is threatened with softening of the brain, and the amount of exertion that would be re quired of him to make the canvass would kill him. He needs repose. which he could not have if he engaged in the ex citement of a Presidential contest. New York will doubtless be for Tilden for first choice. The breach between him an...

THE FELICIANA SENTINEL. BOBESON AN1D HIS PLUNTDER. The veil which covered Robeson's ad ministration has long since been removed. IIo was for eight years Secretary of the Navy, and in this period expended mon ey to the extent of $182,4960,033. At the same time he sold material to the amount of $100,000,000. This makes together, in round numbers, $282,000,000, or more than $35,000,000, a year. When Secreta ry Thompson entered the office its inven tory stood as follows: a. A debt, justified by no law whatever, amounting to $7, 083,402; b. Forty-eight permanently use loss ships, carrying 624 guns c. Two inferior sailing ships, with 8 guns i d. Twenty-four temporarily useless ships, carrying 209 guns; e. forty-threo use ful ships, with 225 guns. Out of 117 ships, there were but 43, and out of 8057 guns, only 223, t'lat could be used. These figures are by no means invented. T.;ey rest upon facts which Mr. Thomp son, himself a Republican, has confirmed. Thus, in the eight years of Robeson'...

THE FELICIANA SENTINEL. 'SHE OONVENTION. The great question whlch is agttating the public mind throughout the State, is the State debt. There is a large class of ,mr people who believe that much of this tdebt is of very doubtful character; in ideed, so doubtful was the legality of this tlobt, that a portion of it was bought up e 25 eta. on the dollar and by some ho ens pocus converted into State bonds, and which bonds were afterwards funded, and now form a part of the State debt, the interest of which we are at present !tot able to meet. We speak knowingly when we state that if en investigation this state offacts turns out to be true, the people will re Case to recognize it. The people are to .seet in their sovereign capacity shortly, to convention, and he will be a bold del egate who will venture to vote a tam to pay any debt created in fraud. The fact is patent, and we need not at tempt to conceal the truth front the world, the people of Louisiana demand a reduction in taxes, no m...

THE FELICIANA SENTINEL. TAXATION NOT EQUAL. There appears to be. a strong disposition among our business men to have a change in the license sys. tern. Tax the cepital invested they say but let us have no special tax. There is no justice in the present license system, because it bears unfairly on the small dealers. As well say that a landed proprie tor must not only pay a tax on the s~mred valuation of his real cs-ate but that he must also pay a special license for the privilege of owning the property, for collecting the rents, or for trying to make it pro ductive. There is juat as much reason in one case as in the other. About the only jastific-tion seems to be that our fathers have done this thing. When a merchont has paid his tax on capital invested, why should he pay a special license to carry on that business in which he has this capital invested. The license dis tinguishing a retail dealer from a wholesale dealer, does not meet the issue, because there are small re tail deale...
