THE- PRESS. CINCINNATI, SATURDAY, JUNE 4. Italy and the Italians. Groat event whioh change the current of history, that remodel society, and give a fresh impetus in a new direction to hu manity, are of slow growth, and the work of no one man or era. Who can tell the great Reformer that broke up the craot of conservatism, and opened the long closed fountains of thought? Bright links there are in a long chain of large and small circumstances, reaching from first cause to practical effects. How was it in the progress of England from feudalism to modern civilization? Doeds and illustrious names are scattered along the tide of time, as the lights of mental development and physical growth. Such are the pictures everywhere, when we unroll the vast panorama of the past, and scan its prominent features. 80 was it, so is it now, in Italy, and with the Italians. Circumscribing our view within less than a century, what changes are apparent! The sanguinary scenes of the terrific French Revolutio...

MNCW1LT & AVERY, IMPORTERS OF AND DEALERS IN CARPETING 00 Wett Fourth tfreel, Pike's Opera -House Building. WWBWMWI WWW WW THE PRESS. CINCINNATI. MONDAY, JUNE 6. Flogging in the Public Schools. We are pained to learn that the use of the rod in our Schools is on the increase. There is a general impression that our Board has passed a rule against the prac tice; but(if suoh is the case, it baa not been enforoed, and has been omitted in the reports. There is nothing in the most recently published regulations to warrant a teacher in whipping a child, but also nothing against it This is a grievous defeot in our otherwise excel lent School System. It was Chamfokt who, when Rclieheres said that he had only committed one sin in his life, asked, "When will that end?" This sin of Schools seems equally interminable; for it is a sad, inoompetent, abortive method of controlling a ohild, and therefore a sin. "It is worse than a crime 'tis a blunder," said Napoleon : this is not con sidered an ...

RINGWiLT & MEM, IMP0RTER8 OF AND DEALERS IN CARPETING, 00 West Fourth street, Pike's Opera -House Building. )e3 THE PRESS. CINCINNATI, TUESDAY. JUNE t. Mutation of Parties. It is strange how little foundation there is for party sentiment. The veriest jot of an incident frequently answers to set a whole party to assailing or sustaining a position that before had not a particle of interest in it, and what to-day is the eon trolling question was yesterday of no consequence, or perhaps the very con verse of the proposition, wag the one upon which they stood. We need not go back to the days of the fathers, whose argument for a Constitution instead of a Confederation was that we might have a Tariff for protection to home in terests, with the same men urging it who went to war a few years later on the cry of " Free Trade and Sailors' Righto," nor later, when a majority of Democrats in a Democratio Congress chartered a United States Bank, which same Bank was defended in after years by t...

RIH0W1M & AVERY, IMPORTERS OP AND DKAXERS IN CARPETING CO Wrl Fourth street, . Pike's Opera -House Building. THE PRESS. CINCINNATI, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8. - The additional intelligence respecting tha battle of Montebello, which we pub lish this morning, is not of that explicit and reliable character which is so much to be desired. Whatever use a compiler of chronological tablos may be able to make of it the bare announcement of a battle and a victory being sufficient for his purpose the historian or newspaper editor can find in it but few materials for compiling a readable narrative of the event and its attendant circumstances. A few days more must elapse, before we ehall be favored with abstracts of the official dispatches, from which some more reliable particulars may be gleaued, than can be obtained from the incoherent ut terances of our Telogruphio savans. Let us, therefore, patiently wait for additional light.' Oao ii strongly reminded of the " up heaving of the nations" of Eur...
