Hass to contest the election of Wm. McConoehie as mayor of Rock Island continues to re ceive signatures, and there is ever; indi cation that it will be of such a charac ter, when it reaches Mr. Hass, that he will feel it his duty to make the contest. He stated this morning:, that he was per fectly willing to do so as he believed the outcome of such proceedings would elect him mayor, but he wouldn't enter into a matter of so much consequence and one which requires so much atten tion, simply on his own behalf. If he had assurances that it was the wish of his friends, be would go into it, with deter mioation and energy to obtain his righto, no matter how much trouble and incon enience it caused him. THE rBOOK TBHOTP AISCrTTB, THU11SDAY APRIL 11, ISS9. THE DAILY ARGUS JOHN W- POTTER. Thubsdat, April 11, 1889. Hon. A. P. Pktrik, who was the re publican candidate for congress in 1894. says be is being importuned from friends all over the district to use bis influence for them in their postofflce fights. But Mr. Petrie thinks the dispensing of pat ronage belongs wholly to Mr. Gest, and he doesn't propose to rob him of this privilege. Really, Mr. Petrie is very considerate. He knows tbat meddling with such affairs is like playing with fire, and if anyone is to be burnt, he pre fers that Mr. Gest should be the victim. Congress having adjourned some time since.lt is a matter of some comment that the Hon. W. H. Gest still hovers around the capital. Ostensibly be is trying to get some offices for his constituents, but we have a lurking suspicion that tbe honorable gentleman is staving off bis return borne as long as possible. He can stand the firing at long range pretty well, but be no ...

THE DAILY ARGUS JOHN W- POTTER. Friday, April 12, 1889. The democratic state central commit tee is to meet at the St. Nicholas hotel at Springfield on May 1, to perfect a per manent organization. The resolution providing to submit to the people of the state the adoptio prohibition amendment to theoi)8titu tlon, was defeated in ihebuse of repre sentaliyes Wednesdy78 votes were re corded in fa-o( submitting and 48 K'DtXithouKh nearly two-thirds of i cast were in favor of the reso lution, the proposition was far from a passage, as the votes of twolhirds of the members elected, or 103 affirmative votes, are required to submit a constitutional amendment to the people. Represents tive Crawford, of this county, voted in favor of the resolution, and Represent tive Hurst against it. The Argus notes with pleasure that Hon. E. W. "Cbkap John" Wanamakeb makes the temperance speeches and runs the Sunday schools for the administration, but First Assistant CUrkson is running the posU office department under the old fashioned spoils system, that bids fair to have every democratic employe of that department bounced inside of six months, and his placo filled by a republican hustler who is neither a Sunday school scholar nor a prohibitionist. Harrison having succeeded in getting rid of the senate, will now proceed to do some hustling on bis own account. He still has some very fat plums to dispose of, such aa the public printer, land com miHsioner, justice of the supreme court, ministers to Germany and China, etc., and the office seekers will see that be does not become loncsoce in the white house as lon)r as he has an office to give away.
