UNLESS Jar Gould is a "conspicuous and sublime liar," as Upraoo Greeley used lo say, his note in answer to a letter of inquiry by Washington McLean as to Gould's connection with the appointirent of Stanley Matthews to the supreme bench shows Dorsey a prevaricator of that description. If his relations witli Matthews were such as he represents it^is not at all probable that ho would give a hundred thousand dollars for his appoint ment, as Dorsey charges, or any other sum for that purpose. As the matter now stands it is a question of veracity between the great star route thief and the great monopolist, and credibility would ceitainly bring down the end of the scale on the side of Jay Gould. It is true the evidence of person accuscd of an offence is to be taken with a wide degree of itllowance than otherwise, but then the general character of the prose cuting witness must also be considered and weight given to ins testimony ac cordingly. This is said by Dorsey to have occurred three y...

U». THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. 0. WAKNQCK, ,1* EDITOK. THE Black Hills Journal bewails the fact that another summer has come and almost gone without bringing to that region occupied by thirty thousand people any railroad outlet, but still leaviag them isolated with two hundred miles of trans portation by teams to connect them with the balancc of the commercial world. It. does seem strange that such a communi ty of people wfth their mining, stock and agricultural resources should thus be ig nored by railroad corporations. THE Press and JDakotaian, which lays •o much flattering unction to its soul over the imagined security of the Sioux Falls constitutional convention from the interposition of the prohibitionists seems not to haye heard that from some coun ties contesting delegations on that very question will be present. The prohibi tion delegates may. not be strong enough in numbers to incorporate, their "idea" in the constitution tkeie to lie formulated but they will get in their wo...

IV 5r v^1"' W 1 VOL. VI. THE enemies of RIMCM Conkling might find f«od for political reflection in the fact that in nil the jobbery,' whisky ring •nd star route frauds, bargains and sales la political campaigns, there is a con spicuous absence of Ins name. The ticienttflc editor of the papersars that the dimensions of the tooth would indicate that its possessor subsisted on trees and shrubs. That accounts for the absence of trees in Dakota. They were all de voured by those mastodons. It would be something of a sight now to see one of those prehistoric monsters going along the James river nipping off the trees two and three feet in diameter close to the ground. Tits address presenting the women suffrago petition to the 3oustitution convention, now in session at Sioux Falls by Mrs. Bones, of IJay county, though presented in the limited space of five minutes, is the best production called out by the convention so far and would do crcdit to the ablest talent iu that body. There seems to he a strong feeling against the move ment in the Black llills country, which comes principally from the feeling that that section would be made the tad of the new state kite, which Is not improb able. The Journal kicks against the statehood and division scheme on this ac count, notwithstanding the fair "divy" of ollices assured that section by the Yankton leaders of the movement. CAWAL8 ON THE PLANET MAM& 5"-£b9sesa thirty or forty views ol Mars presented to me sixteen years ago by the Rev. Mr. Dawes, in which, though he used but an eight-inch telescope, some of the long, narrow passages men tioned by Mr. Webb are shown. I men tion this because it may serve to cor roborate what otherwise might seem improbable—the circumstance that Sig nor Schiaparelli should have seen with liis comparatively small telescope what has escaped the attention of observers using such instruments as the Herschel ian reflectors, the three-loot reflector made by Mr. Common and the magnifi cent twenty-six-inch refractor of Wash ington. Albeit until observers with such instruments as these have dis tinctly seen what Signor Schiaparelli has mapped we must not too hastily as sr.ine that these are real features ot Mars. Mr. Nathaniel Green, whose fine lithographs of Mars adorn a recent volume of the "Memoirsof the Astron omical Society," considers that those uarrow passages are...

ifeUs iM' i' |v I 2 THE tremendous receipts of wheat yes terday at Diiliit.li over that of any otlicr previous year or period is probably more than to any other cause due to the in cieased number ot producers aDd facili ties for preparing grain for the market. T'lero are perhaps twice as many pro ducers in North Dakota now as there were last year, twice as many to carry wheat to market, and it is not strange there should be twice as much shipped in a given period. The weather also has been unusually favorable for threshing and marketing wheat. There need be no alarm for over production, as the causes we have cited are abundantly sullicient to account for the extraordinary receipts at Duluth. A FfcW days ago John Jacob Astor deeded his property, valued at seventy millions, to his son William, who is now United States minister to Rome. It is part I be gift to John Jacob by his father William B., a few years ago, and in pur suance of the old English idea of primo geniture, brought,...
