THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 18G7. REPUBLICAN STATE TICKET. STPRXMK jcdge : Henry TV. Williams, of Alleghany co. Muddled. We are glad that the radical organs in this country agree with us in denouncing the uiurdcr of, Maximilian as a piece of unmiti gated brutality, and if they were at a differ ent stand-point from that thej occupy, they would take precisely he same view of the Jeff. Davis question. This is the view taken by the civilized nations of the earth, and would be the Tiew taken by The AlUghanian and Tribune, only for the fact that they have been schooled in vindictive Radicalism. Freeman. That's a wonderful piece of English, if English it is, even for the Freeman, whose English, like is logic, is very apt to be as correct when read backwards as in the usual order. The Freeman is "glad," for which we congratulate it, and it is glad because the "radical organs" agree with it in denouncing the "murder" of Maxi milian. So far, sooner than part company with fuch a jolly Jack Bunsby of a...

SS EE 33 2!3 5 All Nations Rut One. The day cforo the Cunard steamers arrive in port, Uing the last of the voyage, is one the jiossengers generally improve aa au occa sion for a sort of iarewell and grand din ner, at which songs are sungj jokes cracked and speeches made, every one at the table being expected to contribute something to the entertainment. . Upon a recent occasion it chanced that quite a large party of gentlemen, representing a great many nationalities, were celebrating the tnd of the TOjage by proposing toasts. Everything passed" off pleasantly till at last an American, rising in turn, proposed : "Here's to all nations but one." This, 89 may be supposed, created eome sensation, each suspecting that bia nation was the one referred to, and prepared to resent an indignity thu3 publicly offered. "Monsicu - does not mean la belle Franco ?" said a Frenchman, .first break ing the silence that followed. '.Not at all j viva la France," said the Yankee, raising his goblt. "Seno...

Pell, who was Lieutenant Governor of this State last year, is a man of consider able eccentricity of character a whole aouled, good hearted man, but decidedly odd in ninny respects. Nothing so much disturbed his equanimity as for persona to exhibit a curious disposition, and at tempt to learn more of hid affairs than he ehnse to tell. Many years ago, Mr, Pell concluded to ecct a fence around one of his lots iu the city, and in order to save himself from the daily interrogatories which ho knew would be made by his neighbors and passers-by, he had a sign painted, on which he displayed nil the information in regard to the lence which he fancied eould posfibly be demanded or desired. ( An Opportune Arrival. In the jear 1S49, writes a correspondent, I was en gaged collecting outstanding debts due the Apalachian, a paper published in Blaire ville, Indiana county, and my business led me to the Cherry Tree, at the headquar ters of the Susquehanna river. It was in May, and the flowers were out in all their pristine beauty. The water in the river was pretty high, and I had ridden some distance along the bank, when I suddenly came to the margin just where the river took a turn and the water deepened. As I approached, I heaid some one sobbing .as it in the greatest distress, and on look ing down the river, I discovered a young girl, apparently about fifteen or sixteen years of age, and remarkably handsome, wringing her hands and moaning in the most heart-rending manner. I asked her what was the matter, and between cries and sobs she answered me "I was playing on this log and my baby fell in the water and th there it goes, down the river !" Upon looking down the stream, ...
