STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA; FRIDAY EVENING, FEB. 10, 1865. W. J.OOWING, Editor. Our Only Recourse. The peace that we want, and that will he satisfactory to our countrymen when obtained, must be wrested from the rebels at the point of the bayonet. Negotiation, compromise and concession will alike fail and be unheeded by the rebels, determined, as they express themselves to be, to neg-otlate for the desirable result on the basis of an acknowledgment of their separate existence and independence as a sovereign power. To yield this point would simply be to surrender everything for which we have been contending during four years of bloody war The people of the loyal States bear with cheerfulness the heavy and-exhaustive drains mads on them for its support, simply because they believe; in doing so, they are aiding to preserve for themselves and their offspring the rich inheritance of liberty and land bequeathed them by a heroic ancestry . They cannot be induced to imagine j that this republ...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA; MONDAY EVENING, FEB. 13, 1865. »/ i. OOWISG t Editor. W. J. OOWIIVG, Beginning of the End The last ditch of the rebellion is on the Atlantic rim of its Confederacy, where it is now struggling with the armies of the Union. Booted and broken as it soon will be between Richmond and Charleston, it will then be virtually and essentially used up. As if to add emphasis to the replies borne back to Richmond by the rebelenvoys who lately had audience with President Lincoln, the long passive energies ol war that hear upon the rebel capitol have lately sprung into activity again, and once more the thunders of battle shake the halls of Confederate Council. As Davis and his ministers listen to the report of their embassy—as the Congress ot the rebellion wrangles over its projects for the arming of slates—as the Richmond editors disclaim against the Union and compose their passionate appeals to a despairing people—their apprehensions are quickened and their brains stimu...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA TUESDAY, EVENING, FEB. 14, 1865, W. ,T. COWING, Editor. The Late Peace Conference. People begin to express anxiety to know the nature of the representations ra ade byMr. Blair at Richmond, which led to the recent peace conference in Hampton Roads between the President and the rebel commissioners. It stems to be thought that more was expected on both sides than was realized, and Mr. Blair has the credit, with many, of raising such expectations. If Mr. Blair raised any false expectations, it was certainly done through a misunderstanding of his authority. Ourown opinion about the matter is, that though the conference did not result in the object for which it was held, yet the holding of it did much good in at least exposing the untenable position and absurd demands of the rebels as the price for a return to their allegiance aud duty. It is very certain that, since the meeting took place, and its proceedings were made known to the country, public opinion has un...
