FAEQUAII'S MEDICATED EMU 111 Al BHAIBY i A delicious Tonic Bitter: Juice of the Grape, medicated with Juniper, Khuburli, and Peruvian Bark, lor Invalids. "Good Wine needs no hush," BUT in this age of quackery and humbug, it is necessary to at least state the virtues or qnalI ities of even a well known article, and certainly ! the California Grape could lay claim to this title. I I believe, indeed, I know from experience, that its juice produces a purer, less hurtful, and more exIhuaratlng and healthful bey erage than nine-tenths of the stuff imported and imitated iii the United States. If this can be said of the wine usually sold, what cannot be said of Brandies? Fab! the very thought is significant of poison. But to the purpose. Dr. Jas. L. Furqunr's Medicated C.iliforata Wine and Brandy, i; simply th Bnanted juice, and the distilled juice of the California Grape, judiciously medicated with Peruvian Bark, Turkey Rhubarb, Juniper Berries, and otherI vegetable remedial agents,sl;illfu...

The Secret of Success. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 December 1859

The Secret of Success. JOHN G. SAXE. "Good luck is all!" the ancient problem teaches, But though it looks very grave and wise, Trust not the lazy lesson that it teaches, For, as it stands, the maxim lies. That luck is something, were a truer story— And in life's mingled game of skill and luck, The cards that win the stake of wealth or glory, Are Genius, Patience, Perseverance, Pluck! To borrow still another illustration, A trifle more specific and precise,— Small chance has Luck to guide the operation, When cunning Wit has loaded all the dice! The real secret of the certain winner, Against the plottings of malicious Fate, Learn from the story of a gaining sinner, Whose frank confession I here relate: "In this 'ere business, as in any other, By which a chap an honest living earns, You don't get all the science from your mother, Rut as you follcrs it, lives and learns. And I, from being much behind the curtain, And getting often very badly stuck, Finds out at last, there's nothing so ...

The National,on the Senatorial Question. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 December 1859

The National,on the Senatorial Question. The San Francisco National, of the 19th inst., seems peculiarly egotistic and arrogant. In a long leader they sympathetically avow their willingness to bide the decision of the Legislature—that they do not believe in "overstepping the bounds of modesty," or "dragooning Representatives"— but don't deny their belief in "buying!" A pretty piece of sophistry for the public pallet, indeed. What docs our cotemporarv infer by his every-day articles, if it is not for the purpose of forestalling popular opinion, thereby "dragooning"' against a positive will? Can he reflect, for a moment, upon his eulogiums of "Col." Washington, without his ■cheek mantling with a blush of shame ?— Such cupidity "smells rank," and should, as it most assuredly will, meet with a signal "Jefeat. In the same article it is asserted that Mr. Latham has dared to speak his mind, much to thier discomfort and antagonistic to their special edict, which may or may not be true; for,...

The Old Letter Case. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 December 1859

The Old Letter Case. ALICE. Yes, ope the ease—once more I'll look, Though it will be the last, For I'm resolved I'll burn them all, Mementoes of tlic past. This one's from horne —I'll not bum that; My parents meek and mild, Fenn'd it to me with fervent love, They bore their eldest child. Here's one, from whom?—let's look inside; Friend of my youth, when last we met Thou wast a happy bride, And such I'll think thee yet. And this, an only brother sent, His sister's heart to cheer 'Mid winter's gloom, he wished in truth, "A happy, glad New Year." A cousin fair this token sent, A pledge of friendship sweet; We parted in loved childhood's hour, And never more may meet. Ah! this is one my sister wrote, A laughter-loving girl, E'en now I see her smiling face, Hid 'ncatha shining curl. And here in one envelop hid, Are letters, full a score, That breathe the deep, fend hope of youth, I've read them o'er and o'er. They tell me not of faithless love, Or that in after years, He sought a fairer,...

The System op Advertising.—The Marysville Express prints a sensible article on advertising, the truth of which every man who advertises extensively—and no others can testily—will endorse." We copy the following paragraph: This is a fast age, and to succeed in any undertaking it is now almost absolutely necessary to exhibit some enterprise. People are generally aware of this, and hence it is that we see the columns of the papers teeming with advertisements, each advertiser publishing to the world his wants or his capacity to supply the wants of others. So that he who plods along, relying solely upon the hope that Fortune w ill lavish her favors ui)on him without any great exertions on his part, finds in a short time that he has been distanced in the race. His goods and ware are unsought for, or his shop is not known. People like to see an enterprising spirit exhibited, and they expect it. The time has long since past, when "old fogies" were popular, and hence the places which exhibit...

Dr. L. J. Czapkay.—The number of those who have sacrificed the joys and pleasures of society to gratify a transitory desire for excitement has never been estimated. If they had been, the labors of those who have ventured, in spite of calumny and detraction, to confine themselves to that field of medical research, embraced under the head of chronic diseases, would be much better appreciated than they have hitherto been by the world at large. The efforts of a Ricord, a Sanger, and a Czapkay — the most illustrous exponents of that branch of science are, however, dispelling the mists of prejudice which rendered the treatment of private diseases a forbidden subject to the general public, and those famous practitioners now stand forth in the light of benefactors of their race. In this State, the success of Dr. L. J. Czapka y has been so marked that envy and detraction have done their best to interfere with his prospects, but his skill as a physician bad already been so established that he...
