F^O^LJLATTION 5,000. VoL. JV.—No. 28. THURBER, TEXAS: SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1900. WHOLE No. 184. FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES AND COMMENT THE shooting of two editors at Denver must have reminded old residents of the happy-go-lucky frontier days. A MOUNDSVILLE, WEST ViB&iNiA, man bought a wife for $25 the other day. He is probobly already willing to sell at a dis- count. THE squabble over who shall write the authorized biography of the late Dwight L. Moody is an insult to the memory of a good man. THE public is begining to wonder whether Senator "Billy" Mason's talk apparatus has only slipped a cog, or is permanently out of repair. HONORABLE JOHN BARRETT, the ex-Minister to Siam, openly charges a speech made by Senator Hoar with having caused the Filipino revolt. THE Senate has at last got the financial debate to moving, but it is one-sided, as the oponents of the financial bill are doing all the talking. JUST by way of keeping in the swim the French and Chinese have been figh...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. Thurber's Fire Department. At the regular meeting of the Thurber Fire Department last Friday night it was decided to hold a regular Department meeting on the second Tuesday night in each month, in addition to the regular weekly practice nights. It was also made com- pulsory that members should attend the regular meetings, and a failure to do so would cause their names to be dropped from the roll, unless an excuse acceptable to the Department was pre- sented at the next meeting. An assessment of 10 cents was lev- ied upon each member for this month to cover incidental ex- penses. It was also decided that the Department should give a ball at the Opera House on the night of February 14, St. Valen- tine's day, and a committee of ten was named by Chief William Lightfoot to make necessary arrangements, and to invite the volunteer fire fighters from the neighboring towns. That com- mittee as named has as its chairman Mr. Robert Best. Later it was decided by ...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. 3 NEWSY NOTES RENDERED READABLE. HE report sent out by General Torres announcing a com- i plete victory over the Yaqui Indians has been confirmed. It was dated January 22, and says that the Mexicans lost eighty m killed and wounded, while the Indian loss was 2,500 killed and 500 taken prisoners. *T^HE Administration has ceased active efforts to get the sev- ! eral reciprosity treaties, negotiated under the Dingley tariff law ratified, and there is much talk of the probability Of the failure of the entire bunch of treaties owing to the combin- ation of their opponents in Congress. It is claimed, however by members of the Administration that efforts to get the trea- ties ratified will be resumed when Honorable John A. Kasson who had charge of the negotiation of all of them, returns from Florida, where he has gone by order of his physician to try to get rid of the grippe. MATTERS in South AJrica have turned out very differently from what was expected. The world looks askance on the Brit- ish resort to dum-dum bullets while the "ferocious and uncivil- ized" Boers have surprised the world by their humanity and courtesy to their enemies. A British officer, prisoner at Preto- ria, writes: "We live in a large stone building that is cool and comfortable. TEXAS MlNJN(r AN!) TRADE JOURNAL. CRUMBS OF COMFORT FOR THE ECONOMICAL Every sensible man is thoughtful over his personal appearance. It is often his capital, his stock in trade. At times quite a question of economy ; and a man abandons the idea of tailor-made garments on account of the high prices asked by the average tailor, and resorts to a make-shift in the shape of a ready-made suit. A matter of false economy. M. BORN & CO. THE GREAT CHtCAGO MERCHANT TAILORS make it possible for every man to have his clothing made to measure. Their FuM Line of Samples has just been received and contains every element of worth. It was never so large or so complete a plentitude of all the novelties the market affords, and at prices that are never equalled — quality always considered. Twenty-three years of experience in one particular line, has es- tablished for M. Born & Co. a reputation for honest and liberal treatment.
