Our Brisbane Letter. (From our own Correspondent). BRISBANE, June 30th. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Times — 4 July 1896

Our Brisbane Letter. (From our own Correspondent). Brisbane, Jnne 30cli. Federation has become a burning question in Queensland at last— fanned into flame by that " side wind " of which I have spoken more than once. It is getting really interesting to watch the way in which this same side wind is being raised. The great Laboar Premier Kingston —who is " kept" by the South Ana. tralian Labour party much as other individuals that may not ba named are kept in ill regulated establish ments—has been put up—possibly by oar own Labour party acting through C. C. K.'a Parliamentary masters—to make a muss over the proposal of our Government to depart from the " Hobart programme." So, after much flying round, the Labour Premier has succeeded in getting up a joint protest from the four colonies of New South Wales, "Victoria. South Australia, and Tasmania—that is, from their four Premiers—re. the pro posed election of federal delegates by our Parliament. It seems our Premier at the Hobart Confer...

Sydney Jottings. (From an occasional Correspondent). [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Times — 4 July 1896

Sydney Jottings. (From an occasional C'orruapondont). The hearing of the case, Patkes v the Works Department before a Royal Com mission, consisting of una judge, dr<tgs along, and though tho doors liavo now been thrown open that nil and snndry may comoand listen, yet but little of interest and nothing very startling has been dis closed. The Tory fact, however, of tho matter bein:r brought forward will make the Government as represented by its various departments, and in its capacity of employer of contractual labor, more careful in its supervision and less likely in the future to be so partial to certain con tractors as to preclude the making of ten ders by a nnmber of ailrepraieiirs, "* & -6 i# The progress, however, of tho othsr Commission, that of the Public Service, is dccidedly startling, both by rcasou of its very obvious want of fairness and method in the last department, namely that of Education, which it has just gono through, and of tho disagreeable shoc...

THE Charleville Times. SATURDAY, July 4, 1896. FOR SERVICES RENDERED. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Times — 4 July 1896

Saturday, July 4. 18!)G. FOR SERVICES RENDERED. A series of able articles appeared in the Brisbane Courier in 1891, des cribing the havoc wrought by rabbits in New South Wales. These articles pictured so vividly the utter ruin brought on all classes of settlers on the land, thai the community soon became alive to the danger which threatened Queensland, should the pest succeed in gaining a good footing in this colony. True, the boundary line between Queensland ani New South Wales had been tepced with rabbit netting from a point commenc ing coastwise, where the pest was con sidered not to exist, and continued westward to a point beyond danger, some years before 1891. Babbits either got through the fence, or were on the north side of it when the work was in progress; probably both. It was very difficult to persuade the pub lic that rabbits existed north of this boundary fence, i.e. in Queensland. Reports from trustworthy sources in the south-west of Queensland were be ing continually r...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Times — 4 July 1896

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—I have been asked to draw the attention of the powers that bo to the great increase of Bathurst burr along the roads leading to Gharleville, with ap parently no attempt being made to check it. It is flourishing about 10 miles out, and if no steps are taken will soon stock np the west. In these times of low prices I assure you there is no margin left tor depreciation of wool by burr. The skins of Bheep travelling to the Charleville Meat Works and elsewhere will be much depre dated in value. -I am Sir9 &c., IS. J. WESTEEOAARD Nibises, Charleville, 13 th J line, 1896>
