CHILDREN'S COLUMN. THE OLD TINDER-BOX. Probably tlicro are fow clill.lrcn of the pre sent day who liavo over scon, or even heard of the old-fnshioncil tinder-box and matches. Yot fifty years ngo tho friellon match, now bo universally used, had but just been in vented, and did not conio into general use for many yours. DUCK RIVER REQUIREMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 1 November 1890

DUCK RIVER REQUIREMENTS MENTS A deputation consisting of the Hon. W. Moore, and Messrs, Mackenzie, Dunn. resq Fenton, Lee, Carnac, and Baker, waited upon     the Minister of Lands on Wednesday last for the purpose of bringing under his notice cer-   tain wants in connection with the Duck River, particulars of which we take from an exchange. Mr Moore introduced the deputation. Mr. Lee dwelt at length upon the advan- tages possessed by Duck River as a harbour, and criticised Mr. C. K. Sheard's report which he said was beyond anyone's compre- hension. They had, he said, a board which would give good account of themselves if fair play were accorded them. They had a large tract of good land awaiting settlement, if only tracks were cut to open it up. If a track were cleared in the direction for some 13 or 14 miles a saving would be affected in     driving cattle to Zeehan of some 50 miles. Mr Lawrence said Mr Sheard had give...

Published Every Wednesday and Saturday SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1,1890. -''' 1 ? i \ '?':'.'.'?? i i t The hearing of the recent Supreme Court case at Ulverstone, for breach of contract   for purchase of potatoes, attracted consider-   able attention amongst all those who have dealings in the tuber, and the decision was awaited with much interest by both growers and buyers. As far as the case in question is concerned it is a great pity that it was ventilated in an open Court, as with a little forbearance on both sides the matter could easily have been arranged to the satisfaction of both parties. But taking the principle involved in the dispute it is well that the decision of the Chief Justice has been obtained for future guidance. Briefly stated the dispute was as follows :— The plaintiff agreed to deliver to defendant a quantity of potatoes of certain quality, affected slightly with second growth, which was to be cleared out by himself ; when the first load was...
