Germany's Position. Admiral Mahan says Germany Must Strike at Once. NEW YORK. Rear-Admiral Al T. Mahon, one of the greatest naval authorities in the world, when interviewed in New York said that Germany's naval hope is to strike immediately, as the stagnation of her sea trade would threaten her life. He expects that a North .Sea en gagement Will take place im mediately, and that the British fleet will win. He believes that Italy must join the war as an ally of France, being compelled to do this in order to hold the Austrians in check for the salvation of the Balkans, which will become the prey of the Turks, unless tha Aus trian Navy can be kept from the shores of Greece.

Coursing, i. BENALLA. PLUMPTON. CLUB. • ENCOURAGE'STAKES. That the Benalla Coursing Club is increasing in popularity is a matter now beyond dispute. The club started on Wednesday to run off the Encourage Stakes, for. 64: all ages, at 2 guineas, with £20 added, for dogs that have never, won 15 clear money in any stake winner, £70 ; runner-up, £20 ; two dogs at £5 ; 4 dogs £2 8s each, Notwith- ( •standing the stake was limited to.64 dogs, no fewer: than 87. horns, were applied for, while 23 who were late had to be refused.' The hares were in excellent trim, although the per centage of kills was somewhat higher than usual. Messrs. Chad wick (judge) and Ryan (slipper) gave every satisfaction. The following dogs were left in the En courage Stake, to he run to day :— Cavanagh's Kuockmoie- a^nd Bird's LadyMyola,. O.Dwyer's.'Ben Hur and Barry's . Fog Signal. Final ties in other events will also be run.
