THE SUPPOSED CASE OF POISONING On Friday morning last the residents of our usually quiet little township were startled with the intelligence that a married woman, named Eliza Eady, well known about here, had died suddenly on the previous night under rather peculiar circumstances, and that a Chinaman, named Ah Young, was in custody upon suspi cion of having caused her death by administer ing poison. ooming so ciose upon the recent foul tragedy at Young, and believed to be almost identical in some of the main points, public opinion at once jumped to the conclusion that another gross outrage upon humanity had been perpe trated, and the unfortanate Celestial was con demned unheard in most minds. And certainly, doubtless from being placed in a position from which the most hardened might have shrank, the supposed culprit, during the preliminary examination at the Police Ct^St, showed signs of evident perturbation, his naturally sallow.-, complexion had changed its lnier ^ j'v lu-^uage (ev...

'Mammas and Mothers.' — 'Beit,' in the Herald says a fow words about ' Mothers — I was walking ono day in that part oa England which was once the ancient Forest of Arden, with a young companion. My youngfHead was asked by a young lady whom we mot,] ' Well, Willie, how is your mamma to-day With more truth and brusnuorio than grammatical exactness, the boy replied, ' I haven'tjgot one; mino isn't a mamma, it's a mother.'' 1 am not sure that I have noticed the difforenco| before ; but I know that in that district we allnost all had mothers — mammas being quite the excep tion. William Shakspere and Henry Parkes were born within the confines of tho Forest of Arden, or thereabouts, and I may almost confi dently assert that neither of them had a ma. Perhaps it might be as well if we had fewer mas and more mothers in these latitudes. Aud yot it would be difficult to state the difference, or to draw a line of demarcation between the two — some mammas rising, as it were, into the rank of moth...

GRENFELL PASTORAL, AGRICULTURAL, AND HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 19 August 1876

GRENFELL PASTORAL, AGRICUL TURAL, AND HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. In September of last year we strongly advo cated, viewing the success of similar societies in our sistor towns, the speedy formation of a Pastoral and Agricultural Association for Grenfell. Even at that time we considered our district was replete with the elements of success : we were centrally situated and possessed in our midst owners ot stations who were doing their utmost to improve the quality of their stock, and our editorial con cluded with a hope that 1876 would witness the holding of the first exhibition under the auspices of the ' Grenfell Pastoral and Agricultural Association.' The hopes then entertained have been fully realised, our suggestions were promptly acted upon in that go-ahead spirit that cannot fail to benefit a district, and for which our little township is now becoming noted, and Tuesday next is the day fixed for the inaugural exhibition of our new society. We have gradually pro gressed from the...

The Road from Young to Forbes. — A belie having arisen in the districts through which th' road from Young, via Grenfell, to Forbes passes that the officer in charge of that road purposes to recommend a deviation from the main sur veyed and gazetted line between Forbes and Thrundle Creek, a petition has been drawn rcp, and is now coiner round for signature. nrntnaHni* against the abandonment of the present line.
