The Annual Meeting. [Newspaper Article] — The North Queensland Register — 22 June 1892

lite Annual Meeting. The great racing carnival ofCharters Towers takes place this week. Visitors *8*e flocking in from aU parts, Cad the " animal of 1892 promises to surpass all and. everyone of the nineteen like re-unions which have passed into history before it. The Charters Towers people are essentially of sporting proclivities, and can. in no way be accused of tak ing their pleasure sadly, and to the Towers Jockey Clul? the town owes more than might he considered by a casual observer, for, in addition to providing us withso many pleasurable days* amusement during the year, it does a considerable amount of good, in the employment of labor and dissemination of capital general ly. Racing is Just now at its zenith on the goldfield, and noth ing can be more absurd than the wail of " too much racing,*' which is sometimes heard. The best proof of is in its success- It is mot when a business is in a flourishing condition that the managersvor pro prietors thereof commence to cry " too mu...

The Northern Local Authorities' Conference. [Newspaper Article] — The North Queensland Register — 22 June 1892

The Northern Local Authorities' Conference. MB, T. WU.LMETT, J.P. After the close of the Crimean war, the subject of our sketch, came to New South Wales. When Separation took place he went to Rockhampton early in 1860. When the Cape Stiver goldfield broke , out in 1866, he spent two years mining on that fiell, finally settled in Townsville in 1870, where he commenced business as a bookseller and stationer which later on developed into a manufacturing stationer's, and letter-press and lithographing printer's. His business twing supported by orders from Charters Towe s, Ravenswood, Hughenden etc. Mr Will mett who now employs forty hands, was an aWerman of the Town«ville Municipality for" ten years, during which time he held the position of Mayor four times. TURF GOSSIP. [Newspaper Article] — The North Queensland Register — 22 June 1892

TURF aJSSlP. (BY HBBXXS.) Cnnnamnlla has departed for Wmton to compete at the Annual Meeting there on the 28th and 29tli instant, it is probable that Tattler and Flinders will also journey thither. St. Albans XX. was scratched at half-past ax on Tuesdaay evening for all engagements at the Towers Jockey Club Annual Meeting, | and Phjsieian has been similarly withdrawn. The retirement of St, Albans II. will be rather a severe blow to backers, as he has been the ruling favorite for some wepta past. On Hie first blush of Donizetti's fame at Hughenden, there was a rush made to couple St. Albans II. backwards and forwards with the handsome chestnut, and a lot of money went on at 1000's to 40. Altogether the dead money lost over Hr. Delander*s horse will tot up to a pretty considerable Ampiint. Donizetti may now be considered as first favorite, but however good he may jet prove himself to be, backers will do well to consider before speculating too rashly, that his victories over Applause a...
