ENGLISH NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen’s Land Gazette — 18 October 1839

ENGLISH NEWS. Mr. Shaw Lefevre's election to the Speaker'« chair was conducted with an amenity and good spirit which it would rejoice the country to ob- serve more frequently in the proceedings of the House of Commons. Mr. Abercromby received from both sides the tribute due to his integrity I and impartiality. Mr. Hindley and Sir S. Lush- ington spoke with kindness and respect of Mr. Goulburn while pointing out the superior merits of their candidate, and Mr. Shaw Lefevrei was alluded to with a feeling of regard by Mr. Wynn and Mr. Wilson Patten, the mover and seconder of Mr. Goulburn ; Lord John Russell compli- mented the Speaker with evident sincerity on ni» election, and the House received biro in a manner which must have been as gratifying to Ins «""' vidual feelings as it was honourable toms oppo- nents. Among the difficulties which now beset the position of Speaker are the nicely balancea state of parties, the conteBt between the House*."" the courts of law, and the immense acc...

MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen’s Land Gazette — 18 October 1839

MISCELLANEOUS. Vori BY Ballot.-Speie* of Mr. Macaulay at the Mdinburgk Election.-I jnust admit that the effect of the practice _f secret voting would be to withdraw the voter from some salutary and honourable as well .stone degrading and pernicious motives. But I ( say that the practice of intimidating voters, instead r-f diminishing, is gaining ground. Believing as I Ho that Ihe operation of the Reform Bill has tended to lacrease rather than diminish that practice, I feel myself called on to consider whether the time has not arrived for applying what seems to roe the only suffi «Jent remedy .(cheers). And, gentlemen, I feel my- self compelled to consider whether in so doing I am not following out strictly, closely, and legitimately, the consequeuces of the Reform Bill itself; for surely IbflM who ippportsd that measure intended to give to the people of Britain a reality, not a delusion they intended to give a nomination, not the name of a nomination-a franchise, not the name of a f...

?&t Courier, -m *?_? THURSDAY EVENING. Octodkr 17,1899. Thk following letters have been forwarded to Hi by tyjr! Turnbull. They require but little comment,"and only further serve to expose the tbiserable shifts to which the Government are reduced, in order to evade the claims of justice. They cannot identify themselves with the expres- sion of 'Tiser's opinions. They are right ia this, for they have enough of their own sins to answer for without putting 'Tiser's absurdities into their wallet. They may have set the wires in motion-and clumsy workmen they have been -but it would not do for them to appear upon the stage as the masters of the Fantoccini. The voice was that of Jacob, but the hand was the hand of Esau. Poor ' Tiser ! He may well ex- claim *. save me from my friends." The Government bad here the opportunity of gaining all they could have done by their Feigned Issue Rill, without any violation of the law. They shrink from the encounter in fear and dismay. The man ag...

©1)* HHûUViVV* FRIDAY EVENING, October l8, 1339. Driven from post to post, forced from every frail and fragile tenement, the Advertiser is at last compelled to take shelter in the fourth reso- lution. Ensconced behind this weak entrench- ment, our contemporary vainly imagines lie can defend his position from assault, and justify the cause for which he fights. Ile has taken his last stand on this ground, and sheltered behind the vicarious shield of authority which so far rpsem bles the sevenfold shield of Ajax, that it has I upon it a plate of burnished brass, shoots forth arrows from his long and pliant bow, with the same will, if not with the same unerring aim, as the Homeric hero who discharged his missiles under the protection of the son of Telamón. We shall see how much his fancied security will avail him. We believe that most of our readers are toler- ably familiar with the famous resolution in ques- tion ; but in order that there may be no mistake or misapprehension upon the s...

SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen’s Land Gazette — 18 October 1839

SYDNEY. His Excellency, Sir Maurice O'connell, has, we ob- serve, brought a whole host of ejectment actions against tlic possessors of landed property, to which he lays claim. The» government has undertaken to defend these actions and in so doing, it docs but an act of common justice. When Colonel O'connell was Lieutenant-Governor of Ne»' South Wales, land anywhere might be had for ask- ing-it was then almost valueless. Colonel O'Conncll left the colony regardless of his 'dirty awes'-he remained «broad somewhere near thirty years, not having in the meantime, from all we can learn, done anything to show that he meant to retain possession of the lands in question. This is apparent from the fact of the government permit- ting other parties to enter upon those lands. Then how does the matter stand? Here «re parties in possession, either by grant or by purchase, of certain property, upon which they may have expended large sums of money which they have made ol' considerable value. Sir ¡Ma...
