SOIL SICKNESS EXPERiMENTS. In an- article in a German publica tion an expert deals interestingly with the question of soil sickness, and des cribes experiments which he has car ried out with flax, peas and barley in order to throw further light on the relation of soil sickness and these crops While his investigations were necess arily of a' somewhat preliimnary na ture, he considers the following con clusions may be safely drawn from them:--There are two forms of sick ness in flax, ''germinating" sickness and "growth" sickness. The "ger minating" .sickness of flax, in- which the seeds rot away in the ground, pre sents similar symptoms- of "germin ating" sickness of peas. In the case of both plants the rotting away, which is piobably caused by pectin ferment bacteria is, apart from the question of vitality of the seed, dependent not only on the soil conditions, such as dampness, but also on temperature and the number of micro-organisms attack ing the seeds.
