RAILWAY EXTENSION. Sunshine to Somerton. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 19 April 1924

RAILWAY EXTENSION. Sunshine to Somerton. For some considerabtle time the Railway authorities have had under consideration a scheme to connect the north-eastern line somewhere about Glenroy or Somerton with the Bendigo and Ballarat line at the Sunshine Junction. The work would form part of the new gravitation yards scheme. The authorities, how ever, have held their hand for a time, on account of other factors which give rise to the idea that the proposed connection would serve more important purposes than being merely a connecting line for goods traffic. The fact has been pointed out that if the proposed line is made available for passenger traffic it would serve an area not already pro vided with such facilities, in the Keilor district particularly, and this traffic would naturally come via Sunshine, there being no direct line from Keilor district or Melton to Essendon. Mr T. Ryan, M.L.A., has been striving for a railway connection between Newmarket and Bulla or Keilor, which, howev...

On the Banks of Maribyrnong Shall Noxious Trades Flourish? [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 19 April 1924

On the banks of, Matiibyrnong Shall Noxiois Trades Flourish? At the Briaybrooki Shire Council meeting on Monidayi the noxious trades question came up for consideration once again. It is apparently a burn ing question, and renewed interest has been awakened by the recent ju, dical oriinion in'which a judge of the higher court has upheld the decision of the magistrates in the case of the coUncil versus F. Watkins Pty. Ltd. The legal ladvisor" f the council, Mr. James Hall, read the judge's remarks on the' subject, and stressed the point that the verdict followed the question of fact that the defendant company held a licence from the council .to conduct a piggery, and also a noxious trades licence;, that it was entitled to boil down food for pigs, and ex tract the fat therefrom, an expert wit ness having testified that fat was not beneficial to pigs, and that boiling for six hours was not 'too long a culinary' preparation for a' hog's banquet, or words to that effect, in the customary ...

SUNSHINE TECHNICAL SCHOOL Its Origin and Work. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 19 April 1924

SUNSHINE TECHNICAL SCHOOL Its Originb.:and -Work. -Th'ere are many residents of Sunshine and surrounding dis tricts who are not. aware of the fact that as far as educational facilities are conicerned they are better catered :for than many large and older centres of popula tion. This condition is due to the foresight and "liberality of Mr H. V, M 'Kay who twelve years ago offered t' the Education Derart ment the sum of £2000 and five acres of land towards the estab lishment of a technical sahocl in Sunshine. This offer was ac cepted, the result being that an up-to-date school was built and equipped with all the necessary machinery andi apparatus for training of our future mechanics. Not only did Mr' M'Kay do this, but he allowed hiis apprentices off during the day to attend the school. A junior technical school for boys was established in 1913, and since then hundreds of boys have passed through the school. At present there are over 80 boys in attendance. *To convey some idea of the ...

HOME GARDENING. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 19 April 1924

HOME GAR®EINU. By "I-Icathcr Jock." The fine rains of the yast few weeks has made the garden to look more beautiful than is generally the case at this time of the year. It has probably made one inclined to relax surface culti vation. 'This, however, is a serious mistake. The surface should be as much as ever be kept coptinually stirred with the garden' rake, as it kills the myriads of young weeds that sally forth after rains. It breaks.. up the' drust formed by the rains, prevenlting loss of moisture by evaporation, and allowing the essential aeration of the surface soil. While the soil is still warm there is no time more opportune for the planting of shrubs or their removal should one so desire. In doing so it is wrong simply to dig a hole and place the plant i' it. As this acts as a drainage pool for the surrounding soil, and the water accum ulating there during the winter rains will suffocate the young roots; Thesoil should be evenly cultivated all through K and given a good dres...

TOO LONG. AIND :TO0;: OFTEN At the Braybrook council meeting the old trouL'?3 cropped up about the. inconvenience caused at the railway crossing in" the populous centre of the thriving town of Sunshine .by the road being closed for vehicle traffic during the greater portion of the busy hours of the day. What makes the matter conspicuously worse is that there is no other crossing between Sunshine and Footscray, and as a consequence country residents, trades men and the genieral travelling public are incommoded to a great degree. That great giant, the Railway Depart ment, must arise from its couch of ease, rub its eyes and awake to the fact that' dpring its Rip Van Winkle slumber Sunshine has appeared upon the map, and demands recognition si mila...

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance CommiiLtee reported having appointed Mis:. Roynoldson at an additional £1 per week to asnizt the rate collector, who could not cope with the work. They thought it th6 wisest and cheapest way of meeting the difficulty. The Prcsident.-Why an extra £1 a week ? Cr. Dmplter.--For the extra work. Cr. McKay.-For one thing Mia3s Rcyholdson did a grcat amount of work in connection with the rate re covery, and did it well. That was 'a factor we had to consider.
